With Our Last $20 -- November Edition

With Our Last $20 is a feature here at The Broke & The Bookish wherein we answer the prompt of which book we'd purchase with the last $20 left in our pocket for each month -- be it new releases or older books..basically which ever book we'd be so excited to read that we'd be willing to spend the last $20 in our pockets on. I mean, we are The Broke and the Bookish after all. We'd no doubt live up to our name and forgo other things for a new book!

Jamie's Pick - Meant To Be  by Lauren Morrill (Out November 13 2012)

This looks awesome! A mysterious admirer that has the main character on a wild goose chase to find out who her true love is! A wild goose chase that is set on a school trip in LONDON. I love that it seems like she is a character who maybe is a little bit uptight and that maybe she opens up a little bit on this trip. WE WILL SEE.

Jen's Pick - What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen

I adore Sarah Dessen's books.  This is her newest book that came out this past spring.  I have been impatiently waiting for the paperback version to be released.  I own all of her other books in paperback and having one in hardcover will just mess up the flow of my bookshelf!  But I'm getting so close to caving and buying the book anyway.

Tahleen's Pick - The Giver by Lois Lowry

This is the new edition that just came out, and yes, I have already read this multiple times. Even though this is sort of cheating since I technically bought it this past week, I rarely buy books so I figured this was a golden opportunity. I had the luck to be able to make it to a signing on Lois Lowry's Son tour, and I just couldn't resist getting one of my favorite books ever signed by the author

Julia's Pick  - The Duchess War  by Courtney Milan (Out November 15th)

Courtney Milan's book series consistently surprise me. I don't think I've fell in love completely with all of them, but every single one I enjoy, if that makes any sense. Anyway, Ms. Milan teased this series with a novella I read this summer, and if the series is anywhere near as good as the novella, it will be totally worth my money. She's doing this all self published so if I want to read it, it is required I buy it since I have yet to see any libraries in my area do the self pubbed purchases.

Gravity (The Taking, #1)

Jana's Pick - Gravity by Melissa West (Out November 20th)

I put this book on my list back in February, and I can't wait to read it! Apparently this year flew by, because I remember thinking it was going to take forever for this one's release. Anyway, it's a dystopian with sexy aliens and mystery and suspense. And it heard it keeps you guessing, with all kinds of plot twists. Sounds like my kind of book!

I was introduced to the Seven Realms series back during the summer. I was told it was a good audio book and I had several road trips ahead of me. So I got the first book... and was hooked! Then I read the first three quickly and had to wait. The fourth and final book was just released last week!

Daisy's Pick- Venom by Fional Paul
I'll second Kimberly's pick of The Crimson Crown (because OMG, LOVE THAT SERIES) and add Venom by Fiona Paul! It's set in Venice, there's intrigue and murder and romance and just COUNT ME IN! It sounds just amazing and I can't wait till it gets here! Also, I'm kind of in love with the mask on the cover and sad that we don't do masked balls here.

Paula's Pick(s)- Dinosaur Warriors by Stephen Leigh
So this past month I've been reading this awful/awesome series that I found at a used book store called Dinosaur World. I bought them because the covers were so campy and because of the promise of talking dinosaurs. They are the kind of book that I read in an hour or two and are so bad and yet so inexplicably enjoyable. At the time I bought 3 and thought that was all there was to the series. LITTLE DID I KNOW there are actually 6 books.
So with my last $20 I would buy Dinosaur Warriors, Dinosaur Conquest, and Dinosaur Empire to finish my collection. Because they each cost about a penny on Amazon Marketplace.

Have you read any of these? Would they be worth spending our last $20 on? What book (new or old) would you be willing to spend your last $20 on this month?

  5. I read Meant To Be and really enjoyed it. It's definitely worth a read, a very cute YA contemporary romance. I'll be spending my last $20 on either Reached or Days of Blood and Starlight. It'll be a tough choice for me between those two.
I love this feature! Thanks for sharing your choices!

  6. This is my FOURTH time writing this comment. I want to punch my phone -___-

Jen: The audiobook of What Happened to Goodbye is absolutely fantastic and if you're an audiobook listener, you should seriously consider getting it instead of the paperback.
(Jamie, since you're now into audiobooks, *wink wink* *hint hint*)

Julia: YES, YES, YES AND A MILLION YESES. I absolutely LOVED the novella and I cannot wait until The Duchess War!!!! I have my fingers crossed that it will be better than The Governess Affair (if that's possible<3). The way the book was set up in the epilogue of the novella was just epic. I REALLY CAN'T WAIT. I'M JUST SO EXCITED.

    1. I know right!? I am really excited. I looked at her website and she said that the Nov. 15th date is an estimate. It could be out before or it could be out after. Since she self publishes, its dependent on when she can get it done. :D

    2. She SELF publishes? WOW! I knew the anthology with Sherry Thomas was self published but not The Governess Affair. It's just so... perfect. I hope it comes out earlier (and most importantly: that we are not disappointed)
