Blog

The Broke and the Bookish is a group of friends that have an unhealthy obsession with reading and would spend every last penny on books even if it meant skipping a few meals. We are the people who lurk in the library, buy handbags based on how many books can be stashed in them, and who refer to characters in books as if they are personal friends.

We sought after other bookish college students to share in our love for reading and were brought together by the College Students group on Goodreads that was created in September 2008. Our desire to share great books with each other in and our tendency to be opinionated and passionate about all things book related naturally led to the birth of The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010. Life took us in many different directions, including marriages and babies and careers, and we officially closed our doors in January 2018. We will always and forever be broke and bookish.

Jamie is the creator of The Broke & Bookish & was tickled pink when her fellow Goodreads friends wanted to embark on this journey with her.  She adores Jonathan Safran Foer, Sylvia Plath, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and JD Salinger for adult fiction. Stephanie Perkins, Laurie Halse Anderson, Markus Zusack and Jay Asher tend to be her YA fave. She doesn't discriminate when it comes to genres as she believes in variety being the spice of life. If she doesn't have her nose in a book, you can find her cooking, traveling, spending time with the love of her life, car dancing, and practicing a little retail therapy. Avid world traveler, singer, music lover, graphic designer, and art connoisseur, Jana (also known as That Artsy Reader Girl) calls the majestic Rocky Mountains her home. She received her bachelor's degree in graphic design and art history in December of 2009, and her master's degree in library and information science in December of 2016. She loves shopping, making jewelry, eating out, traveling, spending time with her friends, and especially reading. Her favorite authors include Stephanie Perkins, Leigh Bardugo, Marissa Meyer, and Lynn Kurland. They have earned her trust... but she loves to meet new authors and explore all genres if a good book gives her a reason to do so! Feel free to contact her at JanaSparkles{at}yahoo{dot}com.

Lori is in law school. She lives in Oklahoma. She has given up on naming a favorite author or a favorite book, though there are many she absolutely adores. Aside from reading, Lori loves cooking, watching baseball, talking about Gilmore Girls, writing, and doing yoga. She hopes to one day open her own bookstore. Lori blogs at http://anirreverentescapade.blogspot.com/ She's on Instagram and SnapChat as LLindsey217, Litsy as LLindsey, and Twitter as CoffeeGirl217. Contact her at loril.aie@gmail.com

Daisy lives in Holland, surrounded by books and blankets to keep her warm while reading. She's known to all close to her as always having her nose in a book and always having one close at hand, this also a deciding factor in what bags to buy since they must at least fit one. Aside from reading, Daisy spends her days being a doctor, currently working at a pulmonology department, trying to keep the patients alive and happy. She loves to spend time with her boyfriend, family and friends, shopping, going to concerts, cooking and watching movies and TV series. She has an eclectic reading taste, but her favourite genres are fantasy, paranormal romance, YA and historical romance.

A Cleveland native, Julia graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 2010. With school and her current job, she has had traveled across the United States and the world - from Boston to Honolulu, Duluth to New Orleans, China to the United Arab Emirates. She enjoys historical romance novels far and above anything else, but also love the good paranormal. When not reading romance, she enjoys YA fantasy/dystopian, scifi/fantasy novels or the odd non-fiction about language. Julia also enjoys singing, playing volleyball and softball, countless geeky things, and taking funny faced selfies when good ones just won't work. You can reach her at bambbles{at}gmail{dot}com.

Kimberly is a quintessential bookworm! She happily goes about her day with the beautiful Utah Mountains as a backdrop. She’s an English Major at Weber State University, with a minor in Theatre. She also works as an intern for the US Air Force. She has her book or nook with her wherever she goes. She loves her crazy family and spends as much time with them as she can, whether it’s having lunch with them, camping trips, family dinners or no mercy water fights. Traveling is one of her true loves and jumps at any chance she gets to see new places. Aside from reading, Theatre is her true love. She does anything she can to be involved, even if it’s just spending the day crawling around in dusty catwalks hanging stage lights. She reads books from every genre, but her favorites are YA and Fantasy. Her favorite authors are J.K. Rowling, Maria V. Snyder, Michael Crichton and many others. She also loves to blast her favorite songs while driving around in her new car that has a speedometer that actually works. Contact her at defygravity0606{at}gmail{dot}com.

Bridget
Bridget currently lives in North Carolina with her husband, Andrew, who works as a dentist with the US Army, and her Bernese Mountain Dog, Maisie. She works as a catering director at a country club and particularly enjoys planning weddings. She loves Stephen King, J. K. Rowling, Gillian Flynn, and too many others to list, and wishes she had a lot more time to read (and write about it!). She also writes her own blog at Dog-Eared & Dog-Tagged and contributes to Insatiable Booksluts and Army Wife Network.

Lauren
Lauren is a tattooed bibliophile with a thirst for literature and the more bookish things in life. She went to Kentucky Wesleyan College, majoring in Corporate Communications and still has no idea what her major even means. She spends her free time with her nerdy boyfriend and her weeny dog. She currently works in the banking industry pushing paperwork for mortgage loans while sneaking in some reading at any free moment. There are too many favorite authors to list, but she enjoys a variety of genres including, but not limited to.. historical fiction, horror, apocalyptic, dystopian, science fiction, fantasy, memoirs, and the classics. She hopes to one day time travel, live in a different country, get a bookish job, and most importantly... own enough bookshelves to hold all of her books.
