Lori's Top Ten Characters (and Literary Figures) That I'd Name My Children After

If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. If you can't come up with ten, don't worry about it---post as many as you can!

 I had a hard time coming up with ten characters that I'd name my children after, so I have a mixture of characters and literary figures.  


1.  Viviane (Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood)--I love this name and I love this character.  And I will be naming my first daughter Viviane.


2.  Hemingway--This is my favorite author and I will definitely be giving my first son this for a middle name.  The first name will be Jackson, in case you're curious.  I'm not hoping that he becomes an alcoholic or falls in love with bullfighting.  But I really enjoy this author and I think it sounds cool.


3.  Lee (East of Eden)--Lee is actually my middle name and it runs in my family, so my first daughter was always going to be a Lee.  As it turns out, Lee is also an amazing character in Steinbeck's East of Eden.  He's a very wise character, who makes me even prouder of my middle name.  He has some of the best lines in the novel.


4.  Adele (Legend of Bagger Vance)--Actually, I got this one from the film, which was way better than the book in so many ways, the least of which is that this character was more of a presence in the film.  You can dock me points on this one, but it's my list, so there.  I think it's a perfectly Southern little name.


5.  Katie Scarlett (Gone With the Wind)--Oh, Katie Scarlett O'Hara.  The character I have wanted to be since I was 13 and first read this novel.  (I actually saw the movie first, but immediately consumed the book)  I think a name like this definitely goes along with a persona.  The name just conjures up this amazingly passionate character.


6.  Steinbeck--Another favorite author of mine.  Obviously, I really like the author's last name as a boy's middle name.


7.  Atticus (To Kill a Mockingbird)--This is another name that conjures a persona.  I would expect great things of a person whose middle name was Atticus.


8.  Mackenzie (Peyton Place)--This is actually in homage to one of my favorite novels.  The mother-daughter female leads have MacKenzie for a last name.  This name would be more about the novel than about a particular love for certain characters.  But I really like the way the novel confronted the American opinion of itself.  It's no Hemingway novel, but it has a great story.


9. Holden (Catcher in the Rye)--I know.  People generally want to smack Holden and tell him to get over himself (with various expletives as part of that sentence).  However, I think it is a great name for a teenager.  Most teenagers go through a really annoying brooding phase and when I think of brooding, I think of Holden.


10.  Dominique (The Fountainhead)--I absolutely adored this character.  I thought that she was very strong, even if she was a bit of a masochist.  To me, she exhibits reckless control.  This character was a composite of so many contradictions.  And I think it rolls so wonderfully off the tip of the tongue.
