The YMAs are coming!!!!

Some of you might know I'm a teen services librarian in a small suburb of Boston, so YA is my scene. And I've been super excited about one day coming up in particular.

Groundhog Day 2015. Not because of Punxsutawney Phil, but because it's the day the Youth Media Awards will be announced.

What are the Youth Media Awards, or YMAs? You might know them better by their individual names: the Newbery, the Caldecott, the Printz, the Morris, plus a whole slew of others that honor stories and authors of books for young people.

I have no idea who will take this year's prizes, though we do have a short list for the Morris Award and the Nonfiction for Young Adults award.

My only prediction is the The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone by Adele Griffin will win some kind of recognition, but that's all I got. I can hardly wait!

Do you have any predictions?

Julia Reviews It Takes Two to Tangle by Theresa Romain

Title/Author: It Takes Two to Tangle by Theresa Romain
Publisher/Year Published: January 2013 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
How I got this book: Library ebook
Why I read this book: The third book in the series sounded interesting and I very, very rarely read books out of order. This is book one!
Rating: 4.5 stars

After my lackluster start of romance reading this year, I decided to continue on with romance as a genre and pick a different book to read on my upcoming trip. I decided to try an author who I have read before and liked, but only had tried once, Theresa Romain. That is how I ended up with a long flight and It Takes Two to Tangle.

The summary for this book does not do a good job of explaining it, so let me take a swing. Henry Middlebrook is a man recently returned from fighting in the Napoleonic Wars, crashing at his older brothers house. He is having problems returning back to a society that has not changed whereas he has, mentally and physically. His sister-in-law decides that what he really needs is a wife and has the perfect woman for him. He agrees to meet her.

Enter Lady Caroline, widow and toast of the town. They would make a perfect match right? Well they would but she has a cousin, Frances her companion, who takes a liking to Henry. They hit it off and she decides to help him in his quest for her cousin's hand at his request. Well things sort of morph from there into a shared companionship, some misunderstandings having to do with some letters and a lot of them growing and changing as people deserving of one another.

This was SUCH a refreshing Regency read! So many times Regency romance falls into the same old patterns. Titled guy, innocent girl, maybe one or both is damaged but their lurve magically heals all wounds and they live happily ever after. There is no such short cut taken in this book. A lot of it focuses on how each of them are trying to work their way back into a semblance of life.

There is one misunderstanding sort of hidden thing, but it is not dragged out and I liked how it was handled. His war wound is a genuine thing he has to learn to live with and I thought was handled really, really well. My other downside (which may not be for some) is one of the sexy-times scenes fades into 1990s euphemisms that had me going, "Wait what just happened?"

It may have dragged a little bit toward the end when some crazy stuff goes down that I don't really think was needed but I still really enjoyed this novel. It's not your cookie cutter Regency. Frances has some hurdles of her own that she has to figure out, and so does Henry. They complement each other so well as a couple!

Overall I highly recommend this to someone who likes Regencys and the world of the ton but want's something a bit different. It's not too far off the beaten path, but enough that it's like reading a breath of fresh air (or some other metaphor that makes sense...)

Top Ten Books Jamie Would Want To Read If Her Book Club Read Adult Fiction

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

I have an amaaaazing YA book club made up of adult ladies (you can read my books I want to read with them) but sometimes I ponder what books I'd like to read/would pick if I had a book club that read adult fiction/non-fiction. I already did a post like this before on my own blog so this is basically part 2 of books I want to read with a book club!

I've just heard amazing things about this one and it looks like it would have a lot to talk about.

Forever, Interrupted by Taylor Jenkins Reid
(just snatched this up for $1.99 on kindle)
I read her book After I Do (which would be an AMAZING book club pick) so I'd want to read this one with others!
I read Matthew Quick's Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock and it was super thought provoking so I'd be hoping this one would be as well!
This has come HIGHLY recommended by some many people and it has won awards!
A lot of people I trust love this one and it just looks like a good book club book that I've been wanting to read for a while!
This premise just sounds AWESOME.
Again, just seems like a good book club pick!

This one soared on to my radar after the Goodreads awards and it looks fantastic!
I read her book, Arranged, and thought it was fun and this one looks like it could be fun but also thought-provoking!

Have you guys read any of these?? Would they make a good book club pick??

Top Ten Tuesday FREEBIE: Bridget’s Top Ten Book Boyfriends

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

Just ‘cause I’m married doesn’t mean I can’t have book boyfriends! And since I wrote Top Ten Jerks in Literature for this week’s TTT over on my own blog, I thought I’d do a positive post over here at The Broke and the Bookish! So without further ado, here are my top ten book boyfriends:

1. Richie Tozier from IT by Stephen King. I dig funny guys, and Richie Tozier makes me laugh out loud more than perhaps any other character in any other book.

2. Nate Tucker from 14 by Peter Clines. Nate strikes me as the kind of guy who everyone likes, the guy who’s always up for a beer or for a game of pickup football. He also just seems like an all-around nice person, and someone who I think I would like to be around.

3. Tommy Phan from Tick Tock by Dean Koontz. He’s got some demons (literally), but I think Tommy would be a fun guy to hang out with when he wasn’t being chased by a demon doll from hell.

4. Jake Epping from 11/22/63 by Stephen King. He’s an English teacher and he swing dances. Enough said.

5. Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I was never really “Team Peeta” or “Team Gale,” but if I had to choose, I would definitely go for Peeta. Sweet and kind will ALWAYS beat out rugged and reckless in my book. This has become more and more true as I’ve grown up and realized that dramatic romantic love might be fun, but it’s not sustainable.

6. Dink from Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. We don’t really see a lot of Dink, but I always enjoyed what we did see. He’s incredibly smart—as all the attendees of Battle School are—but he’s not as crazily ambitious as the rest. I just imagine him being a really sweet person, and someone who I think I would like a lot in real life.

7. Devin Jones from Joyland by Stephen King. Pretty much the same as Nate in #2. I obviously have a “type,” even for my book boyfriends.

8. Max de Winter from Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. This one might be a bit of a stretch, especially because I would probably feel much like the new Mrs. de Winter (as in, like I wasn’t good enough for him) but I’ll allow myself one tortured soul on this list, and Max de Winter is it.

9. Captain Wentworth from Persuasion by Jane Austen. He stays faithful to Anne for eight years, even though her family made her break off her relationship with him. Plus, he’s in the military. That gets him a big old A+ in my book.

10. Travis Cornell from Watchers by Dean Koontz. Travis is one of those totally unassuming loner guys who most people would never give a second glance, but who has a treasury of good qualities hidden behind his gruff introversion. He’s also a deeply sad guy—and I would want to make him happy!

What topic did you choose today? And who are your favorite book boyfriends? You should also feel free to hop on over to my blog to discuss your book anti-boyfriends, aka the Top Ten Jerks in Literature. :)

Julia Reviews Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover by Sarah MacLean

Title/Author: Never Judge a Lady By Her Cover by Sarah MacLean
Publisher/Year Published: November 2014 by Avon
How I got this book: Library
Why I read this book: It's the final book in a series
Rating: 3 stars

Spoilers from her on out for the first books in this series and the identity of Chase.

Summary:
She is the most powerful woman in Britain,
A queen of the London Underworld ...
But no one can ever know.

He is the only man smart enough to uncover the truth,
Putting all she has at risk . . .
Including her heart.

The fourth book in New York Times bestselling author Sarah MacLean’s incredible Rule of Scoundrels/Fallen Angels series. These four dark heroes will steal the hearts of their heroines and the readers alike! This is the last in the Rules of Scoundrels series—Chase’s story

By day, she is Lady Georgiana, sister to a Duke, ruined before her first season in the worst kind of scandal. But the truth is far more shocking—in London’s darkest corners, she is Chase, the mysterious, unknown founder of the city’s most legendary gaming hell. For years, her double identity has gone undiscovered . . . until now.

Brilliant, driven, handsome-as-sin Duncan West is intrigued by the beautiful, ruined woman who is somehow connected to a world of darkness and sin. He knows she is more than she seems and he vows to uncover all of Georgiana’s secrets, laying bare her past, threatening her present, and risking all she holds dear . . . including her heart.

Review:
I really like Sarah MacLean. I really do. I loved the first two books in this series, the third I loathed, and this one sort of fell between that. I liked the setup from the other books, but honestly it has been so long since I have read the other three that I felt like I missed some nuance. So if I take this book on it's own, it sort of falls flat. Chase is super impressive the other three books, actually living up to the machinations that she is claimed to wield. But this one, all I see is a women trying desperately to fit back into society, the same one which she has been trying to ruin for almost a decade.

The writing I noticed really quickly is pretty damn repetitive. If I had to hear one more freaking monologue about motivations I was going to flip to any other book in my nook. I pressed on despite all of this. The romance itself was fine. Nothing special though. The characters were again, just fine. Nothing really stood out to me in this.

The setup was outstanding, but unfortunately the execution fell a little flat for me. I am glad I read it to finish the series. I would recommend it only if you read the other books as I think it would be even less entertaining if I didn't have all the background.

Also? Avon, please. PLEASE stop with the pun covers. This one isn't as horrid as some of them, but urgh!

Note: I didn't super hate this, I read it on one airplane ride. I am sorry I can't get more verbose, but I have been sick all day :( Happy New Year everyone!

Top Ten 2014 Releases Daisy Meant To Read But Didn't Get To

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

I'm basically notoriously bad at actually reading the new releases that I'm excited about and pre-ordered, so this list is way easy to make. And because I had all these extra books, I have another Top Ten Tuesday on my personal blog!

The Books in Series I've Started Before

This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner: I LOVED These Broken Stars and I actually own this pretty, so it should be read soon!

Never Judge a Lady by her Cover by Sarah MacLean: I adore Sarah MacLean's writing, but for some reason, I've yet to read this one and the book before it, but I SO want to read Chase's story!

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss: I own this. Signed. There is no excuse, cause I just need more from this author and I'll take whatever I can while waiting for the next installment in the Kingkiller Chronicles...

Maid of Deception by Jennifer McGowan: Maid of Honor was so, SO good and just my kind of book and for some reason I haven't gotten my hand on a copy of Maid of Deception yet... This should be remedied soon.

Brazen by Katherine Longshore: I love Katherine Longshore's take on the Tudors and I just really don't know why I haven't read Brazen yet. It's staring at me accusingly from my shelf with its gorgeous cover...

Split Second by Kasie West: KASIE WEST IS AWESOME! And Pivot Point was just amazing and swoonworthy and just plain fantastic writing. AND THAT ENDING! Just no words. So obviously I failed to read this, even though I own it...

My Fantasy Fix

Dreamer's Pool by Juliet Marillier: the start of her new series and I am EXCITED! I got this from Mel for our book club's Secret Santa, so I hope I'll be reading it soon :)

Pennyroyal Academy by M.A. Larson: it has a magical school in it. I cannot for the life of me imagine why this hasn't been read yet.

Traitor's Blade by Sebastien de Castell: this sounds AMAZING, it hasn't gotten a lot of buzz, but I think I'll love it.

Moth and Spark by Anne Leonard: DRAGONS! This needed reading YESTERDAY.

So tell if there are books on the list that you've also failed to read! Or other releases that should have been on the list, I'm always happy with book recs!

Daisy Does an Early Spotlight on The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon

Title/Author: The Mime Order (The Bone Season #2) by Samantha Shannon
Publisher/Date published: Bloomsbury, January 27th 2015
How I got this book: borrowed it from my friend Debby, as she was lucky enough to get an ARC!

Goodreads summary: Paige Mahoney has escaped the brutal penal colony of Sheol I, but her problems have only just begun: many of the fugitives are still missing and she is the most wanted person in London.

As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city’s gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take center stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner.

Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided. Will Paige know who to trust? The hunt for the dreamwalker is on.

Ok, first off: have you read The Bone Season? If not, why not? Cause you should. You should probably stop what you're doing right now, including reading this post and go read it. Just go. Go and be blown away by the awesomeness of Samantha Shannon's writing.

So now that we've got that established. Let's move onto me telling you exactly why you should be hovering around your mailbox on January 27th or stalking your bookstore or whatever method you decide on to get your hands on The Mime Order:

-While The Bone Season had a whole lot of info-dump in it (which I was ok with, because hello amazing worldbuilding!), The Mime Order doesn't and it just builds and expands on this knowledge we've gathered in The Bone Season and it was AWESOME. I love re-immersing myself in this world and the characters and just gloriously revelling in Samantha Shannon's beautiful words.

-Paige grows and grows as a character and she's just this strong, badass person who isn't afraid to make hard choices and fights for what she believes in and actually has a LOT of common sense and just, I love her ok?

-WARDEN! I can go all caps on him because he's AMAZING and just LOVE! We read The Bone Season with our book club and all three of us who were there to discuss the book just went *sigh* after someone mentioned him. He's very swoonworthy and he becomes even more so in The Mime Order. Also, the chemistry he and Paige have is just wow. It is SO good.

-THAT ENDING!!! Basically I have ALL THE FEELS and I had some serious book hangover after finishing this and even though I slightly saw it coming I was still like WHATTTT??

So go forth and covet this book. I'm DYING for the next one!

My rating: 5 stars

Jana's Top Ten Most Anticipated 2015 Debuts

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here

Hi all! Jana here. I've kind of taken over today's TTT because I could not narrow my list to just 10 books! As many of you know, I'm the host of the 2015 Debut Author Challenge (read about it and sign up here!), and I've spent the last few months talking with a ton of authors about their upcoming books and I'm so excited about so many of them! So here are 10 debuts I'm really excited about. Head over to my personal blog for 10 more!

1. Ruthless by Carolyn Lee Adams (July 14, 2015)
Girl wakes up in the truck bed of a moving truck, ends up in a secluded mountain cabin with a serial killer, and escapes with her hunter at her heels. HELLO. Sign me up!

2. The Edge of Forever by Melissa E. Hurst (June 2, 2015)
Time travel! And the main girl has a stalker! Sounds interesting.

3. Hello, I Love You by Katie M. Stout (June 9, 2015)
"A teen escapes to a boarding school abroad and falls for a Korean pop star in this fun and fresh romantic novel in the vein of Anna and the French Kiss.

4. Last Year's Mistake by Gina Ciocca (June 9, 2015)
Told in alternating sections, LAST YEAR'S MISTAKE is a charming and romantic debut about loving, leaving, and letting go." Sounds like a fun romantic contemporary, perfect for beach time!

5. The Night We Said Yes by Lauren Gibaldi (June 16, 2015)
"A fun, romantic read, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Susane Colasanti!

6. Pretending to be Erica by Michelle Painchaud (July 21, 2015)
"Walking a razor’s edge, calculating every decision, not sure sometimes who she is or what she is doing it for, Violet is an unforgettable heroine, and Pretending to be Erica is a killer debut."

7. The Creeping by Alexander Sirowy (August 18, 2015)
"Twelve years ago Stella and Jeanie vanished while picking strawberries. Stella returned minutes later, with no memory of what happened. Jeanie was never seen or heard from again."

8. For the Record by Charlotte Huang (TBA 2015)
"Chelsea thought she knew what being a rock star was like . . . until she became one. After losing a TV talent show, she slid back into small-town anonymity. But one phone call changed everything."

9. Lock and Mori by Heather Petty (September 15, 2015)
"...a female Moriarty teams up with her classmate Sherlock Holmes to solve a mystery in modern-day London, until the answers lead him too close to all that she's been hiding."

10. Bookishly Ever After by Isabel Bandiera (December 2015)
"In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably a YA novel with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary. But when Phoebe finds out that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her, she turns to her favorite books for advice. Phoebe overhauls her personality to become as awesome as her favorite heroines and win Dev’s heart. But if her plan fails, can she go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?" I had to post the whole book synopsis because YAY!

Tell us the debuts you can't wait for!!

Jamie Plans To Embark On The Popsugar 2015 Reading Challenge

So I told myself I didn't want to do any challenges this year and then a week or so ago I saw this fun reading challenge on Popsugar. Pretty much it looks like the Seasonal Reading Challenge I used to do on Goodreads like 5 years ago (it's still alive today!) and I always had fun with these sorts of challenges because it meant I was reading a VARIETY of things!

Is anyone else doing this?? Here are my picks so far and I'm looking for suggestions for some of these!

1. A book with more than 500 pages: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

2. A classic romance: Sense & Sensibility -- but okay I really didn't know what they meant by a classic romance. Like how classic are we talking? Could a Danielle Steele novel work? IDK. Would love other suggestions on this one!!

3. A book that became a movie: Oh tons of possibilities here! Still thinking! Any suggestions?

4. A book published this year: Umm this year being 2014 or 2015? Either way, I have a zillion options.

5. A book with a number in the title: Six Impossible Things by Fiona Wood -- really enjoyed her book Wildlife and so I'm itching for this to be published here in the States.

6. A book written by someone under 30: The Duff by Kody Keplinger

7. A book with nonhuman characters: The Bees by Laline Paull

8. A funny book: I'm thinking Is Everybody Hanging Out With Me? by Mindy Kaling

9. A book by a female author: Ummm that's a lot of my TBR list haha. Pretty much anything I want to read.

10.  A mystery or thriller: Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight

11. A book with a one word title: Solitaire by Alice Oseman

12. A book with short stories: Hmmm this is very out of my comfort zone because I don't do short stories. Any recommendations.  I've had A Good Man is Hard To Find by Flannery O'Conner on my shelf for forever.

13. A book set in a different country: A Daughter of Smoke & Bones by Laini Taylor or Carpe Diem  by Autumn Cornwall or Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

14. A non-fiction book: Hmm so many options. Will I go biography or memoir? History? Travelogue? Self help? I DON'T KNOW. For now

15. A popular author's first book: Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

16. A book from an author you love that you haven't read yet: Hmm thinking I'll read a David Levithan book I haven't gotten to yet.

17. A book a friend recommended: Oh jeez. Lots of options here too. Always having books recommended to me by friends in this community.

18. A Pulitzer Prize winning novel: I'm so out of the loop re: awards so I definitely had to look up what has one because i couldn't recall one. I'm thinking Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

19. A book based on a true story: HMMMM. Help? I mean, does a memoir count?

20. A book at the bottom of your TBR list: Okay what even does this mean? I mean, my TBR list is infinite basically and I don't understand. Like a book I'm not sure I want to read and it is on the bottom? or PHYSICALLY?

21. A book your mom loves: Well, that's awkward because my mom died in 2006 and I really don't know what she loved other than John Grisham? I guess I can go for one of those.

22. A book that scares you: Hmm going to have to think about that more.

23. A book more than a 100 years old: Emma by Jane Austen

24. A book based entirely on its cover: I'll probably go to the library and wander for this one.

25. A book you were supposed to read in school and didn't: Lord of the Flies. WAH PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME.

26. A memoir: Oh I have so many of those! I want to reread Eat, Pray, Love actually so maybe that.

27. A book with antonyms in the title: Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

28. A book you can finish in a day: I can finish a lot of novels in a day if I have time? Even decently long books. I'll just pick a short-ish one -- The Summer I Learned To Fly by Dana Reinhardt

29.  A book set somewhere you've always wanted to go: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick -- TEXAS! Have always wanted to visit Texas!

30. A book published the year you were born: Well, that was 1985! So Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale!

31. A book with bad reviews: SIGH. I don't want to subject myself to bad books but this will also give me the opportunity to read a book I was REALLY excited about but got not so great reviews! September Girls by Bennett Madison!

32. A Trilogy: Definitely the Newsoul Trilogy by Jodi Meadows

33. A book from your childhood: Maybe Harriet The Spy?

34. A book with a love triangle: Apparently The Conspiracy Of Us by Maggie Hall has one!

35. A book set in the future: Cress by Marissa Meyer

36. A book set in high school: UH like all of my YA books basically? Or does it need to take place physically IN school for the most part? I'll figure this one out later as I read.

37. A book with a color in the title: Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater

38. A book that made you cry: If I Stay by Gayle Forman

39. A book with magic: Second Harry Potter book? YES I KNOW I KNOW I SHOULD FIGURE OUT A WAY TO MAKE THE WHOLE SERIES FIT WITHIN THIS CHALLENGE SO I WILL JUST READ IT ALREADY.

40. A graphic novel: Blankets by Craig Thompson

41. A book by an author you've never read before: Oh this is easy. LOTS of choices. The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma is one I really want to read!

42.  A book you own but never read: *Stares at the hundreds of books I own but have never read*

43. A book that takes place in your hometown: Hmm Fever 1793 takes place in Philly. I know there are others but I'm BLANKING. Any recommendations??

45. A book set during Christmas: Decked With Holly by Marni Bates

46. A book by an author who had your same initials:  I almost started looking for JB authors but then I was like OH WAIT I GOT MARRIED TWO YEARS AGO I AM NOW JM. Thank you Jodi Meadows for having the same initials as me -- The Orphan Queen it is!

47. A play: Hmmm. Not excited about this one. No ideaaaa. Recommendations??

48.  A banned book: Forever by Judy Blume -- been dying to reread this!
