The YMAs are coming!!!!

Some of you might know I'm a teen services librarian in a small suburb of Boston, so YA is my scene. And I've been super excited about one day coming up in particular.

Groundhog Day 2015. Not because of Punxsutawney Phil, but because it's the day the Youth Media Awards will be announced.

What are the Youth Media Awards, or YMAs? You might know them better by their individual names: the Newbery, the Caldecott, the Printz, the Morris, plus a whole slew of others that honor stories and authors of books for young people.

I have no idea who will take this year's prizes, though we do have a short list for the Morris Award and the Nonfiction for Young Adults award.

My only prediction is the The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone by Adele Griffin will win some kind of recognition, but that's all I got. I can hardly wait!

Do you have any predictions?

  1. My YA Lit professor is on the Morris Award committee, so we've spent the last 2 weeks reading the finalists. She's not allowed to discuss the books with us until after the awards are announced, but I know there's going to be a ton of discussion after! I'll be watching the livestream. It's an assignment of ours.

  3. I was a super nerd when I was small (well, not much has changed really) and one summer I decided I wanted to read ALL the Newbery award winners, and it was so much fun! I definitely recommend it!

  5. I love these awards and every year I get so excited! I agree with you about Addison Stone. I wonder also if We Were Liars or Noggin or The Impossible Knife might get something...For the Newbery I'm thinking Brown Girl Dreaming or Rain Reign. But who knows! I was on a children's book award committee once and it was amazing to get more insight into how groups go about choosing books. It really seems to be a huge task for these categories! I'm excited! So cool that you're near Boston--I'm relocating to the area! -@KatePoseyPhD

  6. I thought for sure that perhaps We Were Liars or Impossible Knife might get something. :( I actually got to GO to the YMAs this year for the 1st time EVER! I'm a middle school and high school LMC Director (librarian). It was incredible to be in the room when they were being announced! I loved sitting in and listening to some of the committees as they chatted about books and also being able to be a part of ones I've never been able to attend before. (p.s. my family lives in Boston. It's one of my favorite places!)
