This week's topic is books that will make you cry. Usually the books that made me cry the hardest tend to be the ones I love the most.
Jen's Picks
1. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: Crying during this book was unexpected. But that one tragic thing that happens took me by surprise.
2. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: Did anyone read this book without shedding a few tears?
3. If I Stay by Gayle Forman: I'm pretty sure I cried the entire time I was reading this book. How could you not?!
4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling: I read the series for the first time over the summer and I'm sure you can guess the part I started bawling my eyes out.
5. Perfect Fifths by Megan McCafferty: I mainly cried because it was the last book of the series and I didn't want to let the characters go.
Kimberly's Picks
1. On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta: The writing is so beautiful and you become incredibly attached to the characters, parts of this book bring me to tears every time.
2. Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling: I know Jen already listed Half Blood Prince, but I'm including the entire series. I grew up with the series and am about as emotionally invested as you can be. I can't read the first chapter of the first book without getting misty-eyed. I've read each of the books numerous times, and there are certain parts (most of you will know what I mean...) that I cry every time, even though I've already been through it before.
3. Me Before You by JoJo Moyes: I knew going into this book that it would be emotional, the subject matter alone told me that. Everyone who recommended it to me also told me so. I was a complete mess when I finished it, tears, anger, more tears.
4. Stolen: A Letter to My Captor by Lucy Christopher: I've read reviews before that said that this isn't a book to be "enjoyed", it's one to be experienced. That is one of the most accurate ways I can think of to describe it. I was pulled into the story and was so involved that half my preconceived ideas went out the window while reading. I was surprised by the tears, mostly by what caused them. Or rather, WHO caused them.
5. How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr: This was another one that surprised me. I knew the topic would be potentially emotional, but there were a few characters that I simply couldn't stand... at least not at first. What amazed me was the growth of the characters and how much I grew to care about them. Definitely was in tears multiple times.

I just bought Me Before You. Didn't realize it's a tear-jerker, but now I'm looking forward to it even more. :)

DeleteI'm intrigued by Me Before You, I'll have to check that one out. I completely agree with your assessment of Stolen! I did *not* expect to be so affected by that book, and certainly not for the reasons that I ended up being so emotional! That one definitely caught me by surprise. The Harry Potter books are beloved by me and I reread them periodically - I shed tears every time.

I'm reading How to Save a Life right now and I'm scared of the ending!

ReplyDeleteThese are some great books girls! The Fault in Our Stars is an obvious choice, everyone's cried at that! And the Harry Potter series, well, turning the pages of your childhood does that to people; I can relate to that. I have If I Stay and really want to read it, but I don't want to be a blubbering mess too much.. I shall have to give it a go! :)

ReplyDeleteGreat list! The first book that made me cry was Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince too :(( Then recently, it's Stranger and The Book Thief. I haven't read Fault in our Stars yet but it's on my TBR shelf

"Code Name Verity" and "The Fault In Our Stars" would show up on my list, too. I'd also have to add "If You Find Me" by Emily Murdoch.
ReplyDeleteBridge to Terebethia was the only book I ever actually cried over... I was young and it was the first book I read where a main character died.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't think of any books that have made me cry..the HP book you refer to made me very MAD but I didn't cry or anything..lol. It's the only book on your list that I have ever read. :)

ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading How to Save a Life - I recently picked it up at Half Price Books. Ah, and HP! So many tears shed! And If I Stay! Great picks! I can't wait to read TFIOS and see the movie. I think I might be the only one who hasn't read it yet, lol. I'm not afraid or reluctant to read emotional books because they're cathartic for me. Sometimes I need a good cry but can't cry, and a book can help me release pent-up emotions. Love this topic! :D
ReplyDeleteThe only book I've read on your list is the Harry Potter series lol. I cried a lot in the last book in the series, though. SO MANY PEOPLE WERE KILLED OFF!

ReplyDeleteI am happy to know that I'm not the only person who was strongly affected by the Harry Potter series. I still reread them all from time to time and remember all the emotions I felt at the first read. There will never be another series like the Potter books :)

I'm constantly told I should read CODE NAME VERITY. If it's gonna make me cry, is it weird that I'm all for reading it now?

Ugh! 'Time Travelers Wife'... I can't even explain that book to friends without breaking down into fits of tears... (I still enjoyed, though.) If I had to choose the number one book that made me cry so much that I threw it across the room...and refused to finish it: 'Angela's Ashes'. Double UGH!

I always try to make my readers cry...but I will always leave them with a smile. :)
I hardly cry when I read. I've had some choked out moments with Mockingjay and One Piece (a manga). The Fault in Our Stars made my list although I haven't read it yet.
