Every other Thursday here at the Broke & The Bookish is going to be A
Cocktail & Conversation time. We'll pose a question to 2-3 members
of TB&TB crew about books, life, music, etc and then they'll
answer and we can converse about it. So grab a cocktail & cozy up
for some conversation. It's 5 o'clock somewhere, friends.
This week: Who is one author that you have put on "auto-buy" and why?
Bridget says: Stephen King! His writing is just so amazing and I've always been totally hooked by all of his books. There are still quite a few published a long time ago that I haven't read, but I will still immediately buy anything he publishes!
Jamie says: Stephanie Perkins! She just writes the kind of YA contemporary that I love and I have LOVED both Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door intensely... really the only books I've reread in a while. I hear she is writing something in the horror genre and I am still SO excited for it because I love the way she writes and she knows how to tell a good story! So, while it's not contemporary, it's already on the list to buy. Doesn't matter what it's about!
Tahleen says: The person on my auto-buy list is hard for me, since I tend to no longer buy books (no room, and no money!) and instead go to the library. But I'll have to go with my main man Bill Bryson, whose books I will actually shell out some cash for, preferably the audiobooks if he narrates them. Those are well worth every penny, especially since I usually will read/listen and reread/relisten. The best part of listening to him in the car is I feel like I'm driving somewhere with a friend; he kept me company on many car rides to and from Ithaca when I was still in college.
True story: I've never read Stephen King before! Well, I DID read Cujo in english class in high school but that's all. I need to rectify this. But Tahleen I'm so with you on Bill Bryson.
ReplyDeleteWhat school did you go to that you got to read Cujo in your English class? I want to re-do my high school years there.
DeleteI auto-buy Kate Morton's new books -- I can't wait for her newest that comes out in 2 weeks!
ReplyDeleteJennifer Echols! I own all her books and will read anything she writes.
ReplyDeleteI still need to read more of her books! I only read Love Story and it was just GOOD not GREAT as I expected it to be from all the praise.
DeleteLISA KLEYPAS! I would buy and read her grocery shopping list. a to do list. a biology textbook. if she wrote it- its ahmaaazing. No argument! Julie James is my 2nd autobuy. I suffer 364 days of the year waiting for her new releases. for YA, definitely Jennifer Echols, Sarah Dessen and recently added: Sarah Ockler!
ReplyDeleteAnother autobuy: Kody Keplinger. I own all of her books but I haven't read any of them lol. I buy them because they sound awesome but I never get around to actually reading them XD
Yes! I literally JUST read both Anna and Lola and I loved them!! Instant Stephanie Perkins fan :) I don't know why I waited so long!
ReplyDeleteHOORAY!!! This makes my heart so happy!!
DeleteAll great answers. I'm kind of with you on the library thing, though. Especially since I work in one, and sit by all those books every day! I don't buy unless they are really special books.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great question! I've never read any of those three authors (horrible, I know!). My auto-buys are many, but currently the ones I can think of are Robin McKinley, Neil Gaiman, Garth Nix, Patricia McKillip and Meljean Brook. (all write fantasy or sci-fi... not surprising)
ReplyDeleteHmm...I usually auto buy if it's a series and I liked the first book. I did, though, sign up to get JK Rowling's new book without really knowing what it was about. I will get Cassandra Clare's new series for sure. We have all of Bill Bryson's books, too. I am getting ready to re-read his last book. I'd auto buy Jane Austen for sure! :)
ReplyDeleteI have a bunch, but off the top of my head: Joshilyn Jackson, Jennifer Crusie, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Lauren Oliver... and tons more, honestly. I have a bit of a book buying problem! :)
ReplyDeleteMine has evolved as authors have fallen off. my number one right now is Linda Howard, Jory Strong and Caitlin Matthews. Great post thanks for sharing !!!
ReplyDeleteOoh, good question. I recently added Stephanie Perkins to my list, Rachel Vincent, Gena Showalter, Stacia Kane, Sarah MacLean are regulars on there ;)
ReplyDelete♥Isalys / Book Soulmates
I will buy ANY book by John Green!
ReplyDeleteAnd I ordered Anna and the French Kiss today. After everything I've read about it, my expectations are really high :)
Daniel Silva for me! His novels are always action-packed with intriguing plots and great characters. He can never disappoint IMO =)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great question, ladies, something I haven't really thought about too much. I think I will always shell out for Andy McDermott's book (think Indiana Jones meets Michael Bay) and Suzanne Collins. I was shocked at how much The Hunger Games series affected me, so I'm putting my money on anything else she writes. As for audiobooks, it'll be anything by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child. Really, anything that Rene Auberjonois narrates. He's a narration GOD.
ReplyDeleteStephanie Perkins is one of mine too! I've read both of her books twice and I can't wait for more. John Green is also an auto-buy for me.
ReplyDeleteI hardly ever buy books anymore. I read so much that I have to get them from the library. I do always buy the Sookie books by Charlaine Harris which only has one more in the series. I buy all the Dark Tower books by Stephen King too. I wish I could afford to buy all the books I read. That would be EPIC!

Angela's Anxious Life
I have two: Lauren Oliver and Maggie Stiefvater! I LOVE everything they write! SO GOOD!
ReplyDeleteThere are certain SERIES I'll auto-buy, but few authors. I'm very broke and very picky, so I tend to borrow before I buy. However, the one author who I will not only auto-buy but also auto-preorder is Megan Whalen Turner. She slays me.
