Top Ten Books I'd Recommend As Good Beach Reads

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list  that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.

Future topics can be found here.

I. LOVE. THE. BEACH.
The ocean, the waves, the salty air and cool sea breeze.  Even the annoying seagulls who try to steal your food.  Going to the beach is an entire experience.  I love everything from picking the perfect spot to spread out your towel to frantically trying to brush off all the sand on your legs/feet before getting into the car to go home.  Luckily, there are many beaches near me.  Unfortunately, I have things like work which prevent me from going as much as I'd like!  But while at the beach having a book to read is a necessity, it's just as important as having a bottle of sunscreen!

Jen's Top Ten Books She'd Recommend As Good Beach Reads

  1. Along For The Ride by Sarah Dessen:  Really, any of Sarah Dessen's books are perfect beach reading.  Especially since most of them (if not all? I can't remember) take place in a beach town.
  2. Are You There Vodka?  It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler:  The beach is not a place to read about a difficult topic or to read a book that will make you cry.  A humorous pick is definitely the way to go!
  3. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald:  A quick, classic read.  I try to read at least once classic each summer.  It reminds me of those dreaded summer reading lists in high school (which I secretly loved).
  4. Wither by Lauren DeStefano: You'll probably end up with a sunburn if you read this at the beach.  You'll be so wrapped up in the story that you'll forget to reapply sunscreen!
  5. MFW Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search For A New Best Friend by Rachel Bertsche: Okay, so I haven't read this book yet (still on the library wait list) but just from reading the summary it seems like a great book for the beach!
  6. The Girl Who Chased The Moon by Sarah Addison Allen:  Just an all around cute, fun read!
  7. Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson: The opportunity to go on a road trip without leaving the comfort of your favorite beach towel and view of the ocean.
  8. In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez:  Assigned summer reading one year in high school.  For some reason I distinctly remember bringing this book to the beach with me!
  9. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson:  Who knows, maybe you'll find some sort of treasure on the beach!  You could strike gold just by making a sand castle!
  10. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins:  Does this book even need a reasoning?
What are you top ten books you'd recommend as good beach (or poolside) reads?  I'll definitely need some new reading material for the summer!

  2. I love Along For the Ride and Amy and Roger's Epic Detour is on my Top Ten list. Anna and the French Kiss would make a great beach read too. I haven't read The Girl Who Chased the Moon yet but I've read some of Sarah Addison Allen's other books and they'd be fantastic beach reads as well.

  3. Oh I'm reading Treasure Island and I don't like it at all. My favourite thing is Silver and yet... he is who he is!

  4. I'm a bit new to the blogging world, and when I discovered this meme I loved it immediately. I'm a fan of lists and books, so great combination! So my first Top Ten Tuesday is online!
I can't wait to check out some books from your TTT.

  5. MFW Seeking BFF is on my list too! I loved that book, especially as someone who moved 6 years ago and still doesn't have a new BFF :(

  6. I went a slightly different direction with this one:

  7. Great list! I love that you mixed a few classics in, as well as Chelsea Handler's book! Memoir-type books by hilarious ladies are some of my favorite summer (or any time of the year) reads!

  8. Love this topic. I was gonna put Along for the Ride too, but chose a different Sarah Dessen last minute, but I love that one too.

  9. This is a great list because it's a mix of familiar and new books. I adore: MFW Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search For A New Best Friend. I just added it to my list. Sounds great!

  10. Along for the Ride made my list! I liked your inclusion of Treasure Island, and I've been seeing Anna on a lot of lists, though I didn't include it on mine because it takes place at a school and for me school is not a summer topic XD

  11. Great list! Sarah Addison Allen's book also made it on my list this week xD

  12. I love Anna and the French Kiss. It's on my list, too!

  13. I put TWO Sarah Dessen books up on my list for beach reads. She's seriously my go-to author in the summer. All of her books could accompany me to the beach and I'd never want to leave .

  14. Agreed - Sarah Dessen is indeed a fabulous beach read! Like you, I picked a classic for the beach - in my case, I went with classic murder mystery with Agatha Christie. Happy summer reading …. and don't forget the sunscreen.

  15. Great list! Sadly I've only read one of them (The Great Gatsby) but I would definitely consider taking Anna and the French Kiss to the beach!

  24. What a great list! I love your reasoning behind The Great Gatsby. I loved that summer reading, too. Thanks for some books to add to my summer reading list this year!

  26. Great list! Most of these are on by TBR list.

  27. I remember the summer after my sophomore year of high school we had Gone With the Wind for summer reading. I brought it to the beach and devoured almost half of it in one beach sitting-it was great!

    ReplyDelete
  28. What a great list! So glad you mentioned The Girl Who Chased the Moon! I read Garden Spells, and want to read this one.

My very first Top Ten Tuesday list focuses on middle grade beach reads for kids 8 - 12.

  29. A true book about murdered political activists is a beach read? Sorry, that's just stupid. I don't care if you were assigned it during the summer. It's not a "beach read" (ugh) because it's not light and inane.

    1. As you even said, "The beach is not a place to read about a difficult topic or to read a book that will make you cry." Did you even read the plot of the book you linked that you had supposedly read?

  30. All awesome picks! This is a beach bag I definitely wouldn't mind carrying to the beach!

  31. Love this topic! And what I appreciate about your list is the wide variety--a wide range of funny, light-hearted, romantic, serious, etc. Great list!

    ReplyDelete
  32. If I'm on a beach, I want some laughs and I want some murder, with a bit of romance blended in. Prime examples: Johannes Cabal the Detective by Jonathan Howard and The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie.

Great lists! I'm going to have to give this Sarah Dessen a try :)

I'm looking forward to catching up on everyone else's posts. :) I haven't actually read anything on your list, Jen, though I do own a copy of In the Time of the Butterflies that I've been meaning to get to. Perhaps a trip to the shore is in order!

  59. I'm a big fan of chick lit at the beach, and Anna Maxted totally fits that bill. My favorite is Running in Heels.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I absolutely agree with your selections of Along for the Ride, Amy & Roger's Epic Detour and Ann and the French Kiss. These are definitely books that should be brought to the beach!

I haven't read The Great Gatsby in... well, forever. I really should do that, especially since the movie is coming out!
