Julia is in a slump. Help me out!

Reading slumps are something that come up quite frequently here. We apparently even have a tag for it. I guess that is probably because we all go through them at different times. Well, I've been stuck in one for over a month now.

I think for me it's a combination of a ton of things that are not putting my in the mood to read. But the one I am going to focus on is I am not finding books that just sucks me in. The last one to do that was Libriomancer and I believe that was only because I was stuck on a plane so I pretty much forced myself to get to the interesting part.

So I need help. What was the last book that really sucked you in from the get go? I don't even care about genre at this point. I'll try anything!

  1. Have you tried rereading books that you love? I normally do that when I am stuck on a slump.

Try Coin Heist by Elisa Ludwig or Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (these are the books I read in just one sitting, this year).

Hope you could get out of it soon! Best of Luck! :D

    1. You know, rereading is one thing I haven't even thought to try! Thanks for the idea.

I've heard a lot about Anna and the French Kiss. Maybe that is what I'll go for.

  2. Right now I'm telling everyone I can to read "The Mad Scientist's Daughter" by Cassandra Rose Clarke. It was nominated for all sorts of awards last year and it fits right into the long enough, but not too long pocket. Give it a try.

  3. I just finished The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson and I was totally involved the whole time. I would also suggest The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer if you need something with a little more action.

  4. I hate slumps and experienced a bad reading/blogging one myself at the start of the year. I completely understand wanting books that suck you in quickly, I tend to go for those, too. I'd suggest 17 First Kisses (I clicked with this instantly. Releases next week!), This Song Will Save Your Life and To All the Boys I've Loved Before (the book that helped with my slump! Fun, entertaining, very readable). Not only are these books easy to fall into, but they're amazing.

Hope this helps and you're back into the swing of things soon :)

  5. I'm in one right now myself, too. All the books I'm reading are either subpar, or don't interest me at all. I haven't had a truly GOOD read since Out of the Easy. The Falconer was good start, but I ended up feeling meh about by the end.

I'm just gonna be rereading books this summer since nothing is being released that I find interesting. It's helping some. Hope it helps you!

  6. Have you read Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, by Matthew Dicks? That was an unusual read, and I really liked it.

  7. I'm currently reading Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson and I love it!

  8. Americanah by Chimamanda Adichie is superb if you have not yet read it.

  9. Ugh...I feel you. It seems like I'm putting down more books than I'm finishing these days. I recently read Dear Killer by Katherine Ewell, and that was marvelous. My favorite book also has a strong hook, it's The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson.

  10. I recently loved Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore…a great twisty summer read!

  11. I recently started Sweet Evil and it sucked me in right away! It typically takes books several chapters to build and interest me, but this book just pulled me in from chapter one! Also check out the Lux series which is one of the most amazing series I have ever read!!! I definitely understand being in slump and it stinks and the Lux series actually brought me out of one. Hope these help!

  13. I am not sure if you have read this or not, but I was in a slump for all of May and picked up the first week of June 'We Were Liars' by E. Lockhart and that helped. It isn't the best book in my opinion (I think my opinion goes against the grain of many), but it was a quick enough read and intriguing despite the obviousness of the plot.

  14. Ooh I hate book slumps!! They are never fun! Cinder was a good one for me! I loved it!

  15. I got out of my slump when I read The Blooming Goddess trilogy by Tellulah Darling. The first book is called My Ex From Bell. Good luck!

  16. Sorry that should've said My Ex From Hell.

  17. I really got sucked in to The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. It's the first in the Chaos Walking series, and it's really amazing. I've been recommending it to everyone since I read it in January. The Lunar Chronicles (which the first book, Cinder, was recommended by Johannah above) is also really fantastic.

    1. I second both of these suggestions. The narration in the Ness series is a little hard to get used to at first, but don't let that dissuade you -- it's a great, unique YA series.

    2. I love both of those series! I'd recommend the audio for both of them as well - the narrators are excellent.

  18. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion; The Duff by Kody Keplinger; Fried Green Tomatoes by Fannie Flagg.:)

  19. Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith. I have never felt so awake as I did while reading that book. Like, I literally could not sleep until I finished.

  20. Off the top of my head-The Necromancer, by Jonathan L. Howard, Angelfall, by Susan Ee, Soulless, by Gail Carriger, Warm Bodies, by Isaac Marion, Magic Bites, by Ilona Andrews, The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, by Jonas Jonasson

  21. The "Every" series by Ellie Marney for me was the last book I just couldn't put down. But another awesome one is "A Tale For The Time Being" by Ruth Ozeki. It is BRILLIANT

  22. Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson, The Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin, anything A.S. King, This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper, Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys, The Universe Versus Alex Wood by Gaven Extence. I second The Rosie Project, Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness, and We Were Liars. Good luck with the slump, don't let it stress you out! I find that nonfiction helps break slums for me. I recently loved 10% Happier, Rob Lowe's two books, and The Power of Habit. ~Megan

  23. Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins is REALLY good, there's action in the first two chapters and it just gets better from there. All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terril is AMAZING. It's so intense and crazy. Of Metal and Wishes hasn't been released yet but if you use Edelweiss you could req an ARC? It's a Phanton of the Opera retelling.. also creepy and intense but I made myself read the last 80% of it in one day 'cause I just couldn't put it down even though a LOT of it is super problematic in a way.

Also going to suggest re-reading your favorites as well! Especially the ones you haven't read in a while. I've got some books I read as a kid that I want to re-read.

  24. Have you tried A Breath of Frost by Alyxandra Harvey? The Experiment in Terror series by Karina Halle? Or (Don't You) Forget About Me by Kate Karyus Quinn? I just finished up the Gods & Monsters series by Kelly Keaton and loved it. And The Pledge by Kimberly Derting is wonderful. I have many many more suggestions and recommendations, but these are the first to pop into my head. I hope that you try at least one of them!

  25. Try reading something light like contemporary! I always hate slumps, hope you get the way out really soon <3

  26. I'm not sure if you've read these before, but I just read Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, and right now I'm reading Every Day by David Levithan. Both have that addictive quality. I also 2nd (3rd?) The Rosie Project!

  27. The Cast novels by Michelle Sagara are my go to during reading slumps. Even thought I've read them a gazillion times, they always do the trick :)

  28. Anything by Tamora Pierce sucks me in pretty quickly. I'd start with Alanna: The First Adventure - it's pretty quick and really short, so it'll be a good one to start with to decide if you want to read anything else by her.

  29. Still Star-Crossed by Melinda Taub really caught my attention. And it has bickering main characters/love interests so of course it drew me in.lol I'm in a reading slump now as well. Hope you can find a book soon to pull you out!

  30. Torn Away by Jennifer Brown and The Art of Lainey by Paula Stokes are the last two books that really sucked me in! Good luck on getting over the reading slump. :) Those are no fun.

  31. I was in a horrible reading slump just the other week. The book that got me out of it was "The Girl with All the Gifts" by M.R.Carey, which is SO good I still have the scenes twirling around in my head. I found the synopsis interesting enough but was completely surprised by what the book is all about. In a very good way. Good luck in getting out of the slump :)

  32. If you haven't read the Outlander series, you should start now. There are a bunch of them to keep you going, and the show starts soon!

  33. I hate reading slumps! I was in one last week, the book that got me out of it, and it is one that I highly recommend, is Boy Nobody by Allen Zadoff, it's a YA thriller but it is amazing! Very fast-paced and you will fly through it :)

  34. I definitely agree with the idea of rereading a book you already know you love - it's a great to get back into reading! :) If not I highly recommend The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson.

  35. If you like fantasy, I highly recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora - I just could not put that book down! You also can't go wrong with Brandon Sanderson. Good luck with the slump!

  36. The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Zevin. Love it. It will be my most recommended book this year.

  37. I was in a slump for three weeks after reading KISS OF DECEPTION because it was so good. I read 9 books, and only OPEN ROAD SUMMER and THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US (Only $1.99 as ebook right now!!) got me out of it!!

  38. I've gone through a couple of slumps this year. The first book to get me out of it was When I was the Greatest by Jason Reynolds. So NOT my typical read, but it was amazing and sucked me in. 3 weeks later I started another slump, and as mentioned above Open Road Summer and To All The Boys I've Loved helped me get out of it.

  39. Another vote for Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore. Such a good summer read!
