Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!
Each week we will post a new Top Ten list that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.
Hey guys, Kelly here. I'm excited for this week's Top Ten Tuesday because I feel like we can get some great recommendations out of it! We're tackling:
Top Ten Underrated Books
- Anya Seton's books - best. author. EVER. She is a historical author from the 40s and 50s, but I really do feel that most readers would enjoy her books. Avalon is my personal favorite.
- Carolyn MacCullough's books - when I had to write book reports in a psychology class my senior year of high school about books that had deep psychological issues, I used Carolyn MacCullough's books every time. They are all excellent and I heartily recommend Stealing Henry.
- Falling Angels - this lesser known Tracy Chevalier book still has me gushing two years after I read it. Experience said gushing here!
- Amy & Roger's Epic Detour - now I do realize that this books has practically exploded with popularity in the YA blogging world, but what surprises me most is that is hasn't spread much beyond that.
- Bill Bryson's books - I just wish I could tell everyone about Bill Bryson. His memoirs help quell the insatiable travel bug within me and his humor is perfect.
- Anna McPartlin's books - I'm no expert in contemporary romance in the slightest, but I love Anna McPartlin. She is an Irish writer and most of her books deal with death, but they still manage to be fun and cute (that sounds horrible, but really, it's not). I'd recommend Pack Up the Moon.
- Dreamland - not one of Sarah Dessen's better known books, Dreamland deals with some pretty tough issues (abuse, drugs, runaways), which is exactly why I think more people should read it!
I hate not finishing one of these lists, but that's really all I have. I wasn't too sure about putting some books on the lists, what I may consider underrated/unknown may not be to someone else. Also...I'm finally on summer vacation and have been feeling a bit lazy :) Anyways, be sure to link up and visit some other TTTs!

Yes, Bill Bryson! I totally agree :) in fact I should probably go and add him to my list too.

I love Bill Bryson's books! I always recommend them to people too :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard so many good things about Bill Bryson's books! I guess this means I'll have to check them out pretty soon.
ReplyDeleteI've heard so many good things about Bill Bryson's books! I guess this means I'll have to check them out pretty soon.
ReplyDeleteI love Bill Bryson's books! Hilarious, whether he's writing about his childhood, his travels or the history of science.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about Amy & Roger!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm ashamed to say I haven't read any of those! I have Amy & Roger on my tbr though - thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree whole heartidly with Anna McPartlin - I read Pack up the Moon a few years back and immediately fell in love with her writing. The emotion was rich and so well described without bogging the reader down with what can usually be a very heavy topic. I've also heard a lot of good things about Anne Seton from my mom, she knows I love historical fiction and keeps pushing me to read Seton's books.
ReplyDeleteoh I love Anya Seton :)
ReplyDeleteI love Bill Bryson books! I wish I knew people outside of the internet who have heard of him, though.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I'm relieved to see that you did authors too, I just couldn't come up with that many specific books...and I didn't have a full 10 either so, again, I feel better lol. I have Amy and Roger's Epic Detour and Dreamland on my list but I'm going to check some of the others out. Have a great summer vacation, and happy reading!
ReplyDeleteGreat list, 'cause I've never heard of any of these besides Amy & Roger. Can't wait to check out Anya Seton's books! :)
ReplyDeleteI've had Bill Bryson in my TBR pile for a long time now.... I can't wait to get to him!!!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I haven't read the books you mentioned, I have read all the authors, but Bill Bryson. Looks like I need to add him to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of these books yet, but I do have Amy & Roger's Epic Detour on my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteI love this topic because I'm hearing about all sorts of books and authors I've never heard of before!

Roger & Amy! That's such a good one. I can't believe I forgot it. Good list!
ReplyDeleteGreat topic, I wonder what I will add to my TBR list this week.
ReplyDeleteI have a whole host of Bill Bryson on my bookshelves but can you believe, I've yet to read one?!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat top ten this week! Really made me think. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat list, especially Amy and Roger! I had the same problem about not really knowing what was 'underrated'; I ended up going mainly for stuff with less than 100 ratings on Goodreads. Wereworld, in particular, should have been read by about 10,000 people by now if there was any justice in the world!

Great list! I completely agree about Dreamland, everyone should read it. And Amy&Roger is very high up on my wishlist, since I have only heard good things about it. [:
ReplyDeleteErin @ Let's Evaluate
This was a tough week: I only came up nine, which was a bit of a stretch. Stealing Henry looks really interesting - more for the TBR list, I guess. Great list!
ReplyDeleteSeyton sounds interesting, like Georgette Heyer but writing in an older setting, time-wise. And less funny, I imagine.
ReplyDeleteI really like Bill Bryson too. I've got a couple of his books on my TBR list.
I loved this topic!

I adore Bill Bryson, too. Another travel writer I like is Tony Horwitz.
ReplyDeleteJust want to say I think this could be the best Top Ten topic I have seen. What a great way to showcase some great unappreciated reads!
ReplyDeleteBlargh.. I could only think of 6...
ReplyDeleteMy comments here are getting stale: every week I say what a great topic! But it's true! I had a good time putting this list together.
ReplyDeletecan't wait!
ReplyDeleteHey, I've really enjoyed doing this feature! What will the topics be after August 23rd? I like to plan ahead.
ReplyDeleteI still have a copy of Green Darkness. I loved that book! Anya Seton was so good, and that story still gives me chills.
