Pull Jana Out of Her Reading Slump!!

Ok. So basically I just finished my most anticipated novel of 2016 over the weekend and I don't know what to do with myself. The book was A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. Have you heard of it? :P It was positively AMAZING, and my reading life is now over until the next book comes out. I knew this was going to happen. I KNEW IT. I even put off reading it for as long as I could because this same thing happened to me last year with A Court of Thorns and Roses and my slump lasted about 9 months.

I hate reading slumps. I'm so depressed the book is over, I miss the world, I miss the characters, I miss the writing style. What book will ever make me feel better!?! I feel like such a bad reader. lol. I started another book, something totally different, in the hopes of moving on and I'm just reading words but not absorbing them. It's like going on a date with someone after breaking up with the love of your life. Like seriously, what am I even doing!? I thought maybe I should find something new to watch on Netflix and just own up to my inability to read for a little while, but my Goodreads goal is taunting me in my dreams. Plus I want to keep reading because I love it!

So I need help, guys. All the help. Tell me what to read to get over this and I will DO IT. I'm in the mood for another awesome fantasy, a creepy gothic romance, or a mystery/thriller. Maybe something atmospheric that feels very autumn and Halloween (but no paranormal or supernatural because I'm the chickeniest chicken ever). So you can get to know me and my reading tastes, I'm linking my favorites list on Goodreads

  1. I just read Jane Yolen's BRIAR ROSE to get out of my own slump. It's a Sleeping Beauty retelling set, in part, during WWII. I know, sounds like it could be a downer but it really wasn't.

Harlan Coben's HOME just released as well, that was my alternate choice. He almost always works as a slump buster for me.

  2. I honestly don't understand reading slumps. After reading an amazing book, I give myself a day to think about it, then I plunge into one of the other unread books I've accumulated, typically something in a different genre because I love variety.

  3. I completely understand, ACOMAF has destroyed me completely and I read it way back in May! I can't wait for the next book either! I (eventually) read The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen (the sequel to The Queen of the Tearling) which I quite enjoyed. I also read The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare. I also read a whole lot of ACOMAF fanfiction....:)

  4. Have you read The Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom yet? One bonus is that they are both out, so no waiting on books :) I really enjoyed them both.

  5. I suggest The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead. NOT because it is absolutely brilliant - it's good, but not brilliant - but because the world building is good enough to suck in your attention, and the story line is just enough combination of fluff and substance to sort of cleanse the palate without making you feel like you just wasted your time. I want to know what happens next, but I can wait until the next one comes out.

  6. For a mystery, try Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie.

  7. I'll second the SIX OF CROWS/CROOKED KINGDOM vote. I'm in the same place as you due to having just finished CROOKED KINGDOM last night. Life has ended . . .

  8. Try My Lady Jane if you haven't already read it. It's got a totally different vibe from Sarah J Maas's work, so you won't feel like it's a shabby imitation of ACOMAF. I thought it was hilarious and very engaging, and, I loved the audiobook (in case you are an audiobook lover).

  9. Your link to your favorites list on Goodreads is pointing to an anti-Semitism site?

    1. SO weird. No idea how that happened (I swear I linked to Goodreads!), but thanks so much for letting me know! I just fixed it.

  10. Hope you get out of your book slump soon. I don't think I have ever had a book hangover where I couldn't get into another book.

  11. I highly recommend watching some booktube videos to help break the slump. Watching fellow book-lovers talk passionately about our shared love (books) always gets me back into a reading mood.

Besides that, I'd recommend Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter - the best crime thriller I've read so far this year!
