Daisy Talks About Birthdays and Books

So in light of my recent birthday, I started thinking about books as gifts. Because I'm definitely a person who gives books to other people, even if they're not the biggest of readers. Maybe the gift will convert them ;)
BUT as a well-known booklover to pretty much all of my friends and family, I almost never get books for my birthday (or other ocassions), despite annually sending my family my online wishlist so as to not get 'but I don't know which one, cause you have so many'. They're reasoning: you already have a lot of books (which is kinda the same argument I get when I don't give them a wishlist).

Sometimes there's an exception and one of my friends, mother or brother will get me a book, but usually I get other kinds of things. Which is fine, but it made me wonder if this is something that other bookish people experience. Do you get books for your birthday? Does your family/friends start sighing when you give them your wishlist? And what is the favourite book you ever got for your birthday? Mine are the first 3 Harry Potter books, I finally have a full English set (read them in Dutch first)!

Now excuse while I go stuff my face with some leftover pie.

  1. I can absolutely relate to that. For the past 4 years I'd say, I've compiled an Amazon wishlist for my birthday, because 1. it seems easier to do your shopping online, 2. I'm French and read in English so it's easier to find the books I want online anyway.
But every year, either the wishlist gets completely overlooked and I get random things and Sephora gift cards (I still have one from last November and don't know how to use it), or people tell me that they weren't able to find anything in their local stores.
This absolutely baffles me and I don't understand it.

  2. My husband is great about getting me books - but more for Christmas. If I give him a list, he will systematically get everything on it so I am usually careful and only ask for a few I really want. He also likes to give Amazon gift cards with other Birthday and Christmas gifts which is fine with me. Other family members and friends never get me books. Go figure.

  4. Every year I make a book wish list and every year my family ignore it because I already have way too many books! My sister is the only exception and she is my co-blogger so she always knows what to get me!

  5. My daughter will order me books off my Amazon Wish List, but no one else will.

  6. Ha! That sucks! My friends and family actually do buy me books as gifts. I'm always afraid they'll take one look at my book collection and say it's enough, but so far they haven't (plus my grandmother had an entire library of books so I think they just chalk it up as something I inherited from her!).

  7. No one buy me a book except ME for myself :( ! It's frustrating! I usually give books as gifts not considering if that person loves to read or not, but always I pick a book that I think that that person will like it.

  8. When I first became a librarian, everyone gave me gift certificates to a local book store, which was nice, but kind of funny, since I was working in a library, and could just borrow all the books for free ;)

  9. Every year my younger brother tells me that he doesn't want to buy me any books this year and that I need to come up with something else. So lame. One can never have too many books.

  10. No one buys books for me, I've never actually asked them to. My whole family and family in-law knows to get me B&N giftcards and just let me go from there. My TBR list is constantly changing, I'm pretty fickle, so this system works the best. One year I got a kindle for christmas, and this year I am getting a ticket to BookCon :)

  11. I have gotten a few signed books from my sister as gifts. She's as big of a book nerd as I am. That's why we blog together. So often, if she goes to an event she'll get me a book, like my beautiful signed Seraphina. My husband doesn't really give me books but he does give me gifts that feed my reading habit. Over the years he's given me two kindles and an audible subscription. Fabulous gifts that I use every day!
