A Cocktail & Conversation With TBTB crew: Dog-earing Books!

Every other(-ish) Thursday here at the Broke & The Bookish is  A Cocktail & Conversation time. One of the TBTB members will pose a question to 2-3 of the other members of TB&TB crew about books, life, music, etc and then they'll answer and we can converse about it. So grab a cocktail & cozy up for some conversation. It's 5 o'clock somewhere, friends.

Question: Are you guilty of dog-earing or would you never ever ever do such a thing?  Why or why not?

Paula's Answer:  I don't dog-ear pages mainly because I have this book mark that I am overly attached too. (I consider it a horcrux of mine...seriously the few times I thought I lost it I've had major panic attacks. One time I accidentally left it in a library book when I returned it- so I found the book on the shelf the next day and it was tucked inside and I was so unbelievably happy.)  I love used books and I like finding other people's dog-eared pages - or underlined passages. But I just don't do it when I'm reading.

Lori's Answer:  I totally dog-ear books that I own, with one caveat--I don't like to dog-ear pages of books that are my "nice" copy (meaning a copy I'm not writing in and want to keep nice).  I dog-ear pages that I really want to go back to because of a great quote that I just must remember or a recipe that I want to refer back to...even though I usually forget about the quotes or recipes.  I also dog-ear in the rare instance that I don't have a scrap of paper to use as a book marker (seriously, I'll use anything for this, even a straw wrapper or gas receipt).  Basically, I dog-ear to remember.

Jana's Answer: I do this. And I LIKE it (unless it's a library book or a book I borrowed from someone--I would never do it with someone else's book). I tried to quit dog-earing when you lovely bookish friends of mine told me it was a sin... and for a while, I was ok with just bookmarking. But it's really easy to lose your bookmark in bed... or your cat steals it because it has tassels. I think I stressed myself for a little while. I'd go to dog-ear, and all of a sudden I heard people yelling in my head to step away from the book page corner! Finally, I just gave up. Dog-earing and I were just meant to be, I guess. It's easier. Plus, it's kind of fun to re-read and see how you read it the last time. Did I read the whole thing? Did I binge read and only set the book down once? Or, for unmemorable books... you realize, "Oh, wait... I've read this already?" I can't lie. That's happened to me before!

What about you guys? Are you dog-earers or would you never ever??

  1. I hate dog-earing! When I was younger I could just remember the page I was one but as I've gotten older my brain's become more swiss cheese making bookmarks necessary. I have a gazillion bookmarks and will use any other material handy that can substitute for one when necessary. My husband on the other hand dog ears like mad.

  2. I used to dog ear practically ever book I read, but now I don't for some reason. It was a combination of people telling me not to and getting more nice bookmarks.

  3. I dog ear my books, but I wont dog ear another persons books or library books. If its a nice, special, book I will (try to) use a bookmark. I try to buy a special bookmark when I buy or get a special book so I am guilted into using them.
I've also tried putting a bookmark in every book I have and I always end up losing them or dog earring regardless.
Sadly, dog earring and me are here to stay. I was taught the dog ear as a little book nerd and grew up with it firmly ingrained in my psyche. I bet its in my DNA! I wonder if my daughter will dog ear..Hmmmmm

  4. NO NEVER! This drives me up the wall. I can't stand when I get a library book and someone has done that to the pages. RUDE!!! ;)

  5. Dog-earing makes me physically cringe. I carry post-it notes on me so that I can keep track of quotes I like and still keep my books in perfect condition. :)

  6. I just can't dog-ear books. I'll use anything for a bookmark (receipts, envelopes, scraps of paper, actual bookmarks) and if I can't find anything I just try and remember the page or chapter number. I even go so far as to try and not crease the spines of books!

  7. I dog-ear paperback books only, but never hardcovers. And actually, I really only dog-ear mass market paperbacks; the trade paperbacks are nicer, and I like to keep them looking nice. However, since most of the time I'm reading library books - and I would never dog-ear a book that didn't belong to me - I can't remember the last time I actually did dog-ear something! Plus I have a plethora of random scraps of paper (or old baseball tickets) so I'm never without something to use as a bookmark.

  8. I used to (cue rock throwing) tear the corners of pages of my own books/my family's books. And then I started dog-earing, but now I consider myself an advanced book user, and use bookmarks (usually random bits of paper, actually) or the time honored "open over the arm of the couch" technique (which I'm aware is not good for the binding).

  9. Oh my gosh, I can't even. I never dog-ear pages. I don't do it to my books, books I borrow, or books I get from the library. It ruins the books. If it's done enough it can wear away words or art. I was reading a graphic novel from the library yesterday that people had dog-eared. It drives me crazy. I want to be like, "BUY A BOOKMARK!" I also carry around little post its so that I can mark quotes or passages I want to come back to.

  10. I never dog ear books. I either use a bookmark or a sticky note.

  11. I am definitely anti-dog-earing. It bothers me when someone does it in a book I won or borrow from the library. That is why there are bookmarks all over my house, to prevent such an act!

  12. "But it's really easy to lose your bookmark in bed... or your cat steals it because it has tassels."
Ohhhh I hear ya. On a bad evening it can be BOTH OF THESE THINGS AT ONCE. I lose the bookmark in bed, turn everything upside down trying to find it again, only to spot the cat jauntily disappearing around the corner trailing it behind her en route to her little toy stash downstairs :D

I will occasionally dog ear a random paperback (say, one I've already bought second-hand and will only read once) but I do have plenty of bookmarks and if it's a 'nice' book (like a more expensive one, a graphic novel, a nice edition of something, a new paperback) then I'd much rather keep them looking fresh!

  13. I would never! Partly because I think it ruins the books but mostly it's because I just love bookmarks. I have a stack of really nice ones and I enjoy using them.

  14. I'm not a fan of dog earing. I use a bookmark to keep my place when reading. If I like a quote or something of the sort I write it down on a sticky note that I keep attached to the book. I don't judge others that like to dog ear though because everyone has their own reading style and I love reading about other people's reading habits. Great post!

  15. It's likely my OCD rearing its ugly head but I can *never* dog-ear my books. If I'm reading a book in print, I use a bookmark to mark my place and little sticky notes to mark the pages I want to return to later, either to touch upon in a review or make a note of somewhere else. I can't even break the spines on my books!

Suffice it to say, the local used bookstore *loves* when I re-sell them my books as they're still in brand-new condition :P

  16. I always dog-ear! I can't help it! I tried to keep always a book mark with me but I always end up losing it! So to dog-ear is the only way to know what page I'm in. Plus, I love my books to look used and read, so this is the first step. The next one is to break the spine of the book.

  17. I dog-ear, write in, and highlight my own books all the time. I wouldn't do anything to a book I borrowed from someone. I also don't loan books out, because too many people eat while they read and get gross food on the pages. My copy of The Bell Jar had salad dressing on three or four pages after my mom borrowed it.

  18. I don't mine a bit on well loved dog earring, but I don't do it purposefully, and I'm always careful with other people's books. The boyfriend is awful for it though, he has the attitude that if a book gets damaged beyond being able to read it he can just buy another, he actually teases me about how upset I get at the idea.

  19. I would never, ever, ever dog-eared my books. I'd go crazy. And I'll always be ready to slap any friends of mine who does it when he/she borrowed mine. The only exception is may be my Mom... although she's rarely ever read books that I read, anyway.

I'm basically anti-everything about books except naming it, lol. No dog-ear, no highlight, no spine-break, no sticky notes, just noooooo.
