Daisy Talks About Venturing Into the World of Manga

So, you guys remember how our Jana asked for YA manga recommendations? I basically stalked that post because I'd been interested in starting to read manga myself, but had zero clues as to where to start and which series should definitely be on my list.
And you guys were AWESOME! I added a decent amount of manga series to my TBR list and then blissfully dived in. And I'm loving it! The ones I've read so far have been a refreshing change from the usual books I read, the storylines are quick, it's fun and I love having a visual along with the dialogue.

Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba
I've read the first two volumes and I'm REALLY enjoying this! I love the worldbuilding and seeing how Light uses the notebook, it's very intriguing! Obviously it's a little darker as it deals with a Death Note, but it's also funny and it makes me think about what it would be like to actually have the power over life and death at your fingertips, there are a lot of moral dilemma's attached to it.

Maid-sama! by Hiro Fujiwara
This series came highly recommended by my friend Debby @ Snuggly Oranges and it is SO MUCH FUN! It's light and quirky and I love Misaki in all her I am woman, hear me roar-ness and she definitely is a force to be reckoned with! I love the idea of a maid café and it's fun to see Misaki navigate everything that comes with working there. And then there's Usui. And I totally ship it.
It's a lucky coincidence that my interest in this series developed at a time when they're re-releasing the volumes, so YAY!

The Demon Prince of Momochi House by Aya Shouoto
I came across this one in an Edelweiss catalog and the main thing that attracted me to it in the first place are the beings that are on the back, which you sadly can't see on the cover, but they remind me of Pokemon. And I LOVE Pokemon, I used to watch it religiously and have spend hours and hours playing the games, and the little things on the back just looked SO CUTE. So yeah, I totally bought the first volume and it was really fun! There's a lot of build-up and then the first volume leaves us with a cliffhanger that makes me itch to read the next one, which should happen soon cause it's sitting on my shelf :)

So basically what I'm saying is THANK YOU for all your enthusiastic recommendations and I'll definitely be reading more manga this year. Also, if you have more recommendations for me, please feel free to tell me, cause I love adding this to my TBR pile :)

  2. Hi, I love Manga too. I would recommend "Fruits Basket". I haven't read the Manga yet, but I'm so addicted to the anime show! The plot and the characters are amazing. I have the first volume so I need to read it. I would also recommend these, I own them but haven't read them yet. They are "Kitchen Princess" I really enjoyed that one. "Happy Marriage?" "Sailor Moon", "Mixed Vegetables" and "Absolute Boyfriend". My friend recommended "Black Butler". I'm so glad I know someone that loves Manga because I never see people mention it on Booktube :)

  3. The Fruits Basket manga (and anime though it slightly skips over things and doesn't cover the complete series) are both amazing! I highly recommend both. Also the "Library Wars" series is also really good and is still churning out new books every six months or so! Enjoy :D

  4. Read some manga back in middle school, because that was the thing my friends were doing at the time, and I really enjoyed them! (Especially The Dreaming series, if you're into spooky stuff! I also remember the Anima series being decent.) But I haven't read much of them since then. However, I have been hearing excellent things about Death Note, so maybe I'll have to get back into it!

  6. haha. I've been reading managa since HS and I do love. Once in awhile I'll pick up a new one, but now in my late 20s I have less time to read. I haven't heard of Maid-Sama so maybe that one - but there's a few I've reread if you need more recommendations - Fullmetal Alchemist, D.Gray Man, Claymore, Ouron Host Club, Eyeshield 21, Whistle!, Hana Kimi - good mix of shojo and shonen there.

I'm glad you started to read manga! I feel like many people brush it off, thinking it's juvenile- comics get the same treatment sadly - so I'm just super happy you were willing to give this art form a chance.

Oh. Also most things by CLAMP (all women team) are considered classic must reads.

    1. Ooh, thanks!! I'll be checking those out!
And I definitely feel like people brush it off easily as well, which is really sad because it's definitely an addition to my reading experience!

  7. Haha you have reached the manga recommendation jackpot with me *or so I would like to think*, I read so much manga its not funny. xD I'm glad your coming into the world of manga so Welcome!! One question before I start though, do you read manga online or do you get it from the library/bookstore? Cause I'm going to recommend a lot and I usually read from online manga sites..

Okay starting with the recommendations you should try: Fairy Tail, Akatusuki no Yona, Akame ga Kiru, Dengeki Daisy, Noragami, D-Gray Man, Owari no Seraph, Trinity Seven, Naruto, The Breaker, Blue Exorcist, Tokyo Ghoul, Horimiya, UQ Holder, Nanatsu no Taizai, Watashi ni xx Shinasai, Last Game, Btooom, Tokyo Esp, Soul Eater, Tenkuu Shinpan, Flow, and 1/2 Prince.

Yeah that is a very long list and it could've been longer if I could remember every manga I've read! But yeah you should definitely checks these all out when you have time. And if you want some manga sites to read on, you should check out mangahere, mangapark, mangapanda, or mangafox. So I hope you enjoy them!

    2. No problem and argghhh how could I forget to mention Black Butler and Pandora Hearts?! They are both very dear to my heart especially Pandora Hearts, and are awesome manga's to read! Oh and Letter Bee is a good one too! xD & Yeah I would buy manga too since it gives the author more funds but it would be too much on me since I'm still a teen with no job! & Plus there would be no room for me anywhere to put all my books. x_x

  8. I love manga but I don't read it as much as I used to. Some of my favourite titles are Ouran Highschool Host Club, NANA, Paradise Kiss and Taiyou no Uta.

  9. Death Note is SO GOOD. I fell in love with how mind-heavy it is, rather than action-orientated. Another manga I love is Fullmetal Alchemist. The characters in that one are fantastic :)
