Our Bookish Goals For 2015

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

Daisy's Goals/Resolutions

1. Catch up on the reviews I need to write: I actually have a GoodReads shelf for all the books that I've read, that I haven't written a review for and as I'm typing this, there are 77 books on it. I really need to get it together and just write those reviews or just SOMETHING about them so I can move on and clear that shelf out. My goal for 2015 is to have the number of books on this shelf always in the single digits.

2. Catch up on my series: I've started reading SO many series and never continued them beyond the first book, which is just such a waste, cause I loved some of those first in the series and really want to continue them. Which brings me to:

3. Read what I want when I want: I probably can't make this goal all the time, but I need to cut back on review copies and just read all those books I bought for myself or just the ones that I WANT to be reading (though many of those are books I get for review, so it sorta goes hand in hand at times), with less pressure to get them read in time and everything. Also, I can't keep justifiying buying all these pretties without actually reading them.

Julia's Goals/Resolutions

4. Actually read the books on my literal To Read Shelf
I have a shelf in my house that was my literal To-Read shelf. Well, recently it has been overrun into an entire To-Read bookcase... and some auxiliary piles. It probably has about 100 books in it. I want to read them, I want to then move them to my upstairs study room in an organized fashion.

5. Read more in general
I actually did pretty well in one of my reading challenges. I may have even completed it (i am not sure. I didnt go back and look to see if I had read the right 26 types of books). But especially toward the end of the year I just stopped reading in general. I replaced reading time with Netflix binges or HBO Go movies. I want to read again. I need that time back.

6. Finish/Catch-up on some series
This is one thing that is a constant goal of mine. I have a list of series that have been updated while I sit and not read them. I have a whole shelf on booklikes that is just "The Next Book in a Series." So I want to continue with that.

Jamie's Goals/Resolutions

7. Cull, cull cull: I did some decent culling in 2014 but there's still a lot I KNOW I can get rid of. My interests have changed and I have books that I have had for MANY years and I need to just let goooo. Lots of ARCs from years ago that I told myself I will read...not going to happen.

8. Organize my Goodreads: I added a lot of stuff on there from when I joined (2008) until now and I REALLY need to delete some books I have no interest in and organize the shelves I really want to use.

9. Read at least 5 classics in 2015: I have neglected the classics largely in the past few years. I want to get back into reading them.

10. Stop returning my library books late: I can't tell you how much money I spent on late fees in 2014. I mean, it's kind of like donating to the library but I'd rather it be on my own terms rather than because I'm too lazy or forgetful.

  1. Ah, the overflowing TBR (physical) Bookshelf! I know it well. I have two of them. Not single shelves, 2 bookcases taller than me. Plus at least two full boxes. I need to prune them AND I need to read the ones I do want to read. I mean, I bought them for a reason!

As you'll see from my resolutions, many are similar - cut back on ARCs, catch up/get ahead on reviews, read more of what I want to read. Here's hoping we can all accomplish what we set out to do this year!

  2. Culling is on my list. I have already taken 4 large boxes of books off my shelves. I really need to look at my books and decide if I'm ever REALLY going to read them. Painful in some cases, but necessary.

  3. Catching up on my series is on my list too! I have so many series that I have started and just forgot to continue! I have done so pretty good culling on Goodreads list but thankfully my physical TBR is too big.

  4. Great goals, ladies. Some of these are on my list too. So much to do...so little time. Happy New year!

  5. Good goals! I can't imagine not being able to read for fun, so I really hope you get time to do that! I can completely understand your amount of books getting too big. I have a huge stack on my floor...

  6. I have "finish series" on my list as well! And reading classics - I feel like I've been reading way too much fluff recently.
    Thanks for hosting this! :)

  7. Great list of goals! I need to be more choosy about NetGalley requests, instead of requesting everything that sounds even a little interesting. Haha

  8. Good luck with all your goals! Daisy, 77! I wanted to giggle nervously when I saw that, maybe you could do mini reviews for them in bulk? Julia, reading books I currently own is exactly what I want to do this year too. It's going to be my main focus. Jamie, I have tried to read 6 classics a year with the last few years and surprisingly I'm enjoying them. It's fun to revisit some from school and some that I was too intimidated to read previously.

  9. Love this weeks topic. Good luck in all your goals for 2015 Daisy (: I had read 5 classics on my list as well. Lets hope we get there!

  10. If I let too much time pass, I can't write a review so I just move on, leaving it with a star rating on Goodreads but no review. Writing reviews sooner after reading the book is on my list for that reason. I'm also planning on getting rid of books and although it didn't make my list (it did last year) I need to organize my Goodreads account.

  11. Luckily I don't have reviews to write up (save for one which I wrote in a notebook) as I always write a review straight after finishing a book and I don't read another book until I'm done with the current review I need to write up. I often procrastinate and moan about it, but once that review is done it's nice knowing I can curl up with another book without worrying about what I'll have to include in the previous book's review! :)

I read mainly what I want and this year I want to focus more on review copies as most of this year was spent reading my own books/library books with several review books thrown in but I'd like to focus more on review copies!

Good luck with all your goals! <3

  12. I agree with Jamie on organizing my goodreads. I have so many books on my tbr list that I just don't think I'm interested in anymore.

  13. These are great goals! I definitely need to read more books on my "literal to read shelf." I really should read more books I own before buying new ones. All of Jamie's picks are definitely things I need to do. Especially stop returning library books late. I'm terrible with that!

  14. The one about reading books in series really goes with my September is for Sequels Challenge. That's why I started that. I also need to go through and clean some books off my to-read list on Goodreads. Wish they would make it easier to do that though. Great list!

  15. Good luck with all of your goals. I am participating is a sequel challenge for the second year in a row to hopefully finish some series I have started as well. I would also like to read more of the books sitting on my shelves unread instead of picking up all of the latest and greatest as soon as they come.

    Here is my TTT: http://jacquesbooknook.blogspot.com/2014/12/top-ten-tuesday-bookish-goals-for-2015.html

  16. Isn't it so funny that we all are posting that we should read what we want to read, rather than the review copies? I am completely on the same page! Jamie, I paid my first library fine yesterday. It feels weird to do so because I was bringing in 100 books to donate. But I do it without grumbling because I know they have to be fair. :)

  17. These are great goals. I share the need to continue culling and also to review books (although I wound up deleting my shelf for that because it was too stressful to look at!). I find organizing goodreads very therapeutic so I hope that's the case for you as well!

I used to read a "Classic" every summer but I haven't done that in a while. I should start again.

  18. Yes, I just started to do reviews for Authors and Publishers but already I am missing to reading what I really want to. My own to-read list is piling up and that's also one my goals. I had made library fines as a teen and have vowed not to do that one again. Can't even tell you the last time I checked out a book. Thankfully tho, my Goodreads is pretty well organized. That's because I only have about 5 shelves. My reasoning (don't over commit).

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

  19. I love your common goals! I also want to finish some series, particularly the ones I already have at home! Thanks for hosting and have a wonderful 2015!

  20. So many of your goals are on my mental list. Read books on my physical TBR shelf is a huge one. Also review as I read instead of waiting til I forget everything.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh, I have so many series I need to finish, too! I think at last count it was well over a dozen (shudder). I just have such a bad habit of hopscotching on to other interesting books before finishing the ones I've started. I'm a little bit ADD that way.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Those are some great goals. I totally missed writing this post today, so I've going to write mine for January 1st instead. ;) Good luck with your 2015 goals.

Ahahaha I'm glad someone else is in that boat. It's a bit terrible. Good luck with your goals!

    My list.

  24. I feel like I'm constantly making a goal to reorganize or read or review differently. Sometimes I rise to the occasion, but for the most part, I just keep reading :)

Although this year, I would really like to get some more historical fiction in. I'm halfway through Gone with the Wind right now, and have a few others I want to focus on. I've been doing a lot of audiobooks while hiking/running/walking and that seems to whittle down books I want to read but don't have time for!
