 Top Ten Bookish Resolutions

Jamie's Resolutions

* Do a better job with my Netgalley & Edelweiss books: I went overboard back in the day and I REALLY need to read the books I requested so I'm pretty much not going to request anymore (or use that damned auto approval and download them) until I get my NG ratio up and get a chunk of them off my Kindle.

* Read 5 classics in 2014: Pre-blogging I used to read more classics and I just haven't been anymore because they take me longer and require a little more patience. I need to stop caring about that and just read because I truly WANT to read some of these classics on my bookshelf.

* Stop being afraid of chunky books: I have so many HUGE books on my bookshelves and I need to stop being afraid to read them and also stop caring about how it will affect my blogging if I tackle them because I typically think, "I could read 3 books in this time."

Bridget's Resolutions

* Read more non-fiction books: Almost every non-fiction book I've read, I've liked--so I want to try more! Plus I learn stuff!

* I second Jamie's resolution to do better with Netgalley!!

Jana's Resolutions

* I want to read more books! Sometimes I read slow, sometimes I'm too tired, and sometimes I'm in a slump and neglect my books forever. I want to read more, and beat my 62 books read from last year.

* Read books with more "heavy" subject matters: I hate crying, so I shy away from a lot of books with heavy subject matter. I won't read John Green or Gayle Forman even though all my friends love them! I'm just so scared! I need to get over this. What books do I need to read, peeps? Lay them on me!

* I want to be ok with not finishing a book:  If I don't like a book, I'll quit it! That should help with my reading slumps, too. Why waste time reading a book I don't like?

Paula's Resolutions

* I want to read 10 books physically sitting on my shelf before I buy new ones.

* I want to read a book that has been on my to-read shelf for over a year

*  I want to keep my book club going all year.

Tahleen's Resolution

* To read as many of the Youth Media Award winners as I can once they are announced at the end of January. Definitely at least the Printz winner, and preferably all of the honor books.

So what are your resolutions for the new year in relationship to books and blogging?

** A note about the linky change: Mr. Linky wasn't working when I went to post this so I was forced to switch to another linking service that I had already been contemplating because Mr. Linky had been acting a bit wonky. Upon further inspection, I think I am in LOVE with this new one and will go forward with it. There is also a randomizer feature for the linky that I am DEFINITELY going to utilize because 1) now people don't have to all refresh hoping to be #1 on the list at midnight because it's all random and 2) you can discover some new people at the top! Any time you go to the page someone new will be on the top! **

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly link-up in the community where we provide a prompt and other lovers of listmaking join in on it with their own top ten list. Feel free to have less than 10 or more if you need to at times and put a spin on the topic if you need to! Just please link back to us if you are participating :)

To join, link up below with the URL to your blog POST (not your blog), your name and your email (which will remain hidden). Then bounce around the Linky!

  1. Love these different resolutions. Looks like many of us want to do better with Netgalley! Enjoy your week!

  2. I also have improving my Netgalley rating on my list. It seems like a common goal for many bloggers. Good luck to all of you!

  3. Love these resolutions. I'm trying to read more classics too and would like to figure out Netgalley. I got an account a few months ago, but haven't really used it yet.

  4. So many great resolution! I have to agree with the one for NG! That website is going to be the end of me (LOL) . Great post!

  5. Loving your guys' resolutions! I want to try to read more non-fiction too :)

  6. Great resolutions :) I definitely agree with wanting to read some books that have been on the TBR FOREVER. Hoping to do that this year too! :)

  7. I'm okay with not finishing books if they're not working for me, but I definitely avoid chunky books with the same thought pattern as Jamie -- I can't help but think I could read three 300-page novels with the same time invested in a 1000-page one!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have to get better with NG books myself, am doing it right now as a matter of fact. Cleaning up ones that are coming, then those I already missed.
    Happy reading!

  9. I like the idea of reading more classics - I love reading them via audiobook! Also nonfiction - I love memoirs/biographies the best! Nice list, gals!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Those are some really good ones. I agree about the classics and the heavy subject matter - they're usually really worth the read! I also second what was said about listening to classics on audiobooks - try Dracula.

  11. I really liked your idea, Paula, of reading 10 books physically on your bookshelf. Great idea! I added it to mine!

  12. Nice goals, all of you! I'm only making one this year: read 200 books. It's kind of a crazy goal, but I've gotten close before, so we'll see what happens in 2014. Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Good luck with all of your goals this year!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Good luck on your goals! I certainly understand your desire to get better with Netgalley - it's such a cool resource, and I still haven't spent enough time really learning to navigate it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It looks like we have some similar goals, ladies. I'm determined to read more from my TBR pile than to request or purchase new books, and I;m definitely looking for a better balance between fiction and nonfiction this year.

    Good luck with your goals.

  16. Great goals! I definitely agree with the whole Netgalley thing. Should have put it on my list! Thanks for making me think of my resolutions and actually putting them on paper! Happy New Year :)

  17. Jamie - Yes please to more classics! If you need a recommendation, please let me know! I'm happy to share. :)

Bridget - Can I take the inverse of your goal and read MORE non-fiction books, please? Kthx!

Jana - I feel you. It is SO HARD for me to not finish a book! Although I am even more angry with myself when I finish something and I wish I hadn't! Here's to knowing when to say NO and being okay with it!

Paula - I love the idea of reading books that have been on your to-read shelf for over a year. Some have been sitting on mine for over 5 years! A shame!

Tahleen - Isn't it interesting that sometimes the media award winners are the ones that feel like they get the least buzz around the internet? But obviously they are good stuff!

Good luck to you ladies! MWAH!

  18. Those are all such great resolutions. I wish I could have re-thought mine! Have a great week, this is my first week doing the top ten! Lacie @ Rainy Dayz Reviewz

  19. The Outdo It Challenge is a great way to beat your goal from last year. Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes would be a great emotional book to read.

  20. Couldn't think of any bookish resolutions; mine are mostly creative goals. http://dreams-dragons.blogspot.com/2014/01/top-ten-tuesdays-2014-goals.html
    Good luck with your resolutions!

  21. I'd love to *find* a good online book club to participate in - something with not too many members that would try to have a regular day or week in the month to exchange thoughts. I find that big clubs like what I can find on goodreads tend to be so large that it's hard to engage in meaningful conversation.

  22. Reading all your resolutions makes me want to go back and add a few to my own... :) I'm so bad with NetGalley right now. I don't even want to look up my percentage. I doubt I even read half of what I download. :(

Good luck in the new year, ladies!

  23. Oo nice, I didn't realize that InLinkz had a randomization feature, that is handy! I hear ya on the NG books ladies! Apparently they expect readers to read books soon after getting them and I'm like, haha, what readers are you talking to??

    ReplyDelete
  24. My Netgalley ratio is pathetic, I seriously need to work on raising the number, too!

    Happy New Year! :)

  26. All GREAT resolutions, ladies.

I need to not accept any more books until I finish the ones I have on my shelves. :)

    THANKS for sharing.

  27. I echo, your feelings on wanting to do better at managing Netgalley and Edelweiss books. And, I am also wanting to read more classic books as well. Right now I'm currently reading Les Miserables a little bit at a time, so I'm hoping to finish that this year and maybe start Anna Korinina. :)

  28. Don't fear the chunky book! That's one of my resolutions this year. It's taking me significantly longer to read books this year and I'm okay with that. It also ties into reading books on my shelves before buying books ... I'm TERRIBLE for buying all the books before I read what I have. I'm trying to work through my most recent purchases first. For once I finally ask myself, "Do you really need that?" when I think about buying a book ... it's working!

    Good luck with the resolutions!

  29. This is a great list of resolutions. While I am new to Netgalley and Edelweiss, I always see bloggers saying that they need to read more of their Netgalley/Edelweiss books, so I guess one of my goals would be not to fall behind in the first place.

Jana, I'm with you on the whole reading more thing. I felt kind of embarrassed that I set my goal at 75 this year. A lot of people read twice that in a year. But it's fine, because I'm not the only one that can be kind of slow and I'm not the only one who tends to get in pretty bad slumps.

Anyway, good luck with all of these. I know you all will do great! :)

  30. Ah! Improving my rating on Netgalley probably should be a goal of mine. In my defense, I have gotten much better about not requesting books unless I really have time to review them. Here's my list of New Year's Resolutions: http://www.madiganreads.com/2014/01/new-year-resolutions-2014.html

  31. I'm totally with you on the classics, chunky books, and nonfiction in 2014! Sometimes, they're just the right thing to shake up your reading schedule... Good luck with all of your endeavors in the new year, ladies! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. These are great resolutions! I completely understand needing the slowness of reading through a classic. That's something I need to work on as well :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I need to be better about Netgalley as well this year.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love the randomizer component! I didn't realize I could do that with InLinkz!

Read chunky books! If it is a good chunky book, you will speed read through it just like a 300 page book.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh, getting rid of my NetGalley guilt (and improving my requested/reviewed ratio) is a huge goal for me, too. I would love to log on without baggage. Great list!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Totally Second Jamie and Bridget's netgalley resolution! Glad I'm not the only one who does it and I second Paula's reading more books on my shelf, before adding more to it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Like Jana, I want to be able to not finish a book that I'm not enjoying without feeling bad about it - I'm terrible at that!
    Chunky books scare me too!
    :-)

  38. I've purposely not signed up for NG because I'm afraid I'd go overboard and add too many books to my TBR pile!

And yay for more nonfiction, so excited to see that on so many people's resolution lists this year.
