Jen's Harry Potter Summer

Confession:

Until this summer I had only read the first Harry Potter book...which I read the previous summer...for the first time. My Harry Potter summer started back in June when Kelly, Kimberly, and I were discussing Code Name Verity for our collaborative post. Not surprisingly after a while we strayed from our book conversation and somehow it came up that I had only read The Sorcerers' Stone. Somehow that turned into me agreeing to read the entire series. And I did. In twelve weeks I read books two through seven AND watched the first three movies.

Conclusion:

I enjoyed the series a lot more than I thought I would! I'm not much of a fantasy novel girl and didn't think I'd like the books at all. But I loved the world that JK Rowling created and the cast of characters. She even created a fictional character that I hate with a passion, Dolores Umbridge. I have never hated a fictional character so much. I think Hagrid was my favorite character but I also loved Dobby (even though he was a tad annoying at times).

The wizard world...JK Rowling put SO much thought and effort into that and it shows. I swear she literally thought of everything. One day I'll reread the books and probably discover so many things that I missed the first time around.

  1. Seriously with you on the Umbridge hate. I remember once doing a silly meme about "Five fictional characters you'd like to punch in the face" and she was an easy go-to answer.

  4. I have reread the boxes at least twice, and I have definitely picked up on things that I didn't notice the first time around. The re-readability factor is high with this series.

  6. I'm so happy you enjoyed it. I've been on so many people's cases to read the series but as they get older it's harder to get them to read it. I was also planning to re-read the whole series this past summer but I never got around to it :( One day!

  8. I also did not read them until a few summers ago and actually stopped at book 6 - but not because I didn't like them, just because school came up etc. - and I haven't read book 7 yet! That's on my TBR's for next year!

  9. Every time I read this series, i discover something new. A new connection, a new relationship between an event in one of the earlier books and the newer ones. It's amazingly intertwined! I highly recommend that you reread them! Once you understand the storyline, you pick up a lot of details the second time around that help you understand why something happened.

Ok, I gotta run off now and dig them back again and reread for the 6th time!

  11. I am so happy to read this post because I also have only read the first book. All my writer friends exclaim "HOW COULD YOU STOP?" I don't really know why because I really did love the first book...I just never got around to reading the rest. I've made a commitment to read them come January 01 when I (hopefully) have my first manuscript ever under my belt. Glad I wasn't the only one! :)

  12. I love this series!!! And you're right, JK Rowling really understood the world she built and knew every detail, and that came across in her books.

  13. This series is my all time favorite, so I'm so happy you finally read them! And you're right, each time you read them you find something else. I'm on my... 10th... time reading them (I think) and I still see new aspects of the book!

Umbridge. It's a new curse word.

  15. It is brilliant that you have read them all. I have a very geeky habit of re-reading them every year. At the moment I am on 14 years and counting... not sure if I can stop now as it’s become a tradition!

  16. Congratulations on completing the HP series! I hope that the books have made you look at the world in a completely new way. If you are still interested in Harry Potter, make sure you watch A Very Potter Musical on YouTube. Trust me, it's the funniest musical you'll ever see.
