Top Ten Tuesday -- Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make Me Pick Up or Buy A Book!

For the future Top Ten schedule & how to participate go HERE!

This week we are talking about the words in a summary or topics alluded to that automatically make us pick up a book! We've decided to do a collab post this time!

Jana's Picks:

Italy

I have an obsession with Italy, books set in Italy, Italian characters, etc. I went on a huge vacation there last year, and just fell in love. If a book can give me a small piece of that back, I'm all over it.

Cruise

Books set on a cruise ship are also MY FAVE. I love cruising, and go on a cruise every year. I'm kind of weird when it comes to themed reads, and always want to read a cruise book while on board. If you have cruise book recs, please let me know!

Kimberly's Picks

Snarky

Love a character that has a snarky sense of humor.

Inquisitive

Can anyone resist a character that is curious?

Quirky

I'm quirky, I like my books being quirky, a fun quirky character is irresistible. Luna Lovegood anyone?

Jen's Picks

 "road-trip", "travel" and "wanderlust"

These 3 words automatically catch my attention. I love all things travel related, especially if it is an overseas adventure!

And if a book is referred to as "coming of age" or "contemporary" I'll pick it and at least read the back cover to see if I'd be interested in it.

Kelly's Picks

The words "time travel" or "reincarnation" will always catch my attention! Both ideas are fascinating to me and I love discovering different ways authors can play with and flesh out all of the possibilities.

I love music and am immediately drawn to books focusing on the subject. It can either be a book where songs are sort of a backdrop, such as Amy & Roger's Epic Detour, or a biography of a favorite musician/band.

Bridget's Picks:

If I see the words "thriller" or "fast-paced" anywhere in the summary/on the cover, I'll at least strongly consider picking up the book.

Tahleen's Picks

Most books that are set in Hawaii will get my attention. Or books set in the Southwest United States. I like a good road trip novel too. (Apparently I'm not a fan of reading books set in my part of the country.)

  1. I feel like "road trip" is one of the most popular ones, haha. Everyone loves a good road trip, apparently!

  3. Do you have any good cruise ship recs? I've always wanted to read some, but other than The Baby-Sitters Super-Special ("Baby-Sitters Aboard" I think?) I haven't been able to find any.

This is a fun top 10. I'm still thinking of the last 2 words for mine.

    1. Maria, I LOVED Girl at Sea by Maureen Johnson. It's set on a yacht, rather than a cruise ship, but it has the same feel. LOVE it. Also, Decked with Holly by Marni Bates takes place on a cruise to Mexico during Christmas break. It's adorable!

  5. yes... ROAD TRIP. it's hard for a book that centers around a road trip to be bad!

  6. I agree with Bridget - thriller and fast-paced will definitely grab my attention. I can't deal with a slow book.

  9. Road trips and awesome faraway places was on my list too! And I always go after quirky characters as well. I don't think I've ever read a book about a cruise before. That sounds awesome.

  10. I love music, but I don't know that much about it, so music-focused books are a bit hit-and-miss with me - like so many of the references in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist went straight over my head, but then other books, where the main characters are in a band and writing their own lyrics and discussing covers and stuff, I've really enjoyed. I loved Saving June because I felt like I didn't have to know stuff - I learned right alongside Harper.
Hell yes to "Quirky" and "road-trip" too.

@Maria (above), I totally remember that BSB Super Special.

This topic was fun! I had so much trouble choosing images to go with my 10, and finally just doubled them. :)

    1. Thank you! It really is a fun thing to do, and I always recommend people find a book about their favorite vacation spot if they start missing their time there. It's easy to have trip hangovers! :)

  25. Road trips made it onto my list, and coming of age is a great one! One of mine is sort of music-related- something about performing arts gets my attention! I don't know of any books set on cruises, but that could be an interesting read. Great list!

  30. Oh, Italy! I haven't read a lot of books set there. My family is Italian on my Dad's side, and I'd love to take a family vacation there --- but until that happens, maybe I'll just escape with books, haha.

Time travel always grabs my attention too!

  31. I accidentally posted two links. Number 229 is a link to last weeks list. I don't know if there is a way to remove 229, but you may want to look at it. Sorry about that!

I really enjoyed this topic! It made me think about the books that I read and what they have in common. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. My first time participating! So excited to be a part of this :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. This one was more difficult than I expected. I didn't even think of things like character personality-- I love snark and quirks, too. Any character that's funny or disaster prone works for me when I want a laugh!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love that you put snarky, that's definitely a big plus for me too.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love all of your picks, but for some reason "Cruise" made me laugh! I don't think I've ever read a book that takes place on a cruise! Now I'm curious though... Any recommendations?

    1. Decked with Holly by Marni Bates is darling. :) Also, I really liked Girl at Sea by Maureen Johnson, but that takes place on a large yacht, so it's stretching it a bit. If you like adult fiction, Sailing to Capri by Elizabeth Adler is also good. :)

I like the snarky pick. I do like a good snarky character from time to time!

  43. Great topic this week. I totally agree with your time travel/reincarnation choice (which I basically also went with) and also Italy, which I didn't (well, I went with Renaissance Florence, but that's a bit more specific) but which I totally agree with

    ReplyDelete
  51. Kelly, if you like time travel, check out Bee Ridgway's The River of No Return (I reviewed it here, if you're interested.) And yes to music too.

Also yes to Luna Lovegood and quirky characters like her. :-)

  52. I'm a little late with my TTT this week, but I finally got it posted! I love this week's prompt. :)

I should have added "time travel" to my list of things!
