Jana Seeks Recommendations for Gothic/Atmospheric Romance

Hi all! It's during this time of year that I start craving creepy gothic romances that are not going to kill me with the scareds. I love the atmosphere and the ominous happenings in these books, but I don't enjoy stories that are heavy on the supernatural or demon/ghost/etc. stuff. I'm happy with YA or adult, historic or contemporary.

Here's a few gothic and/or atmospheric books I really enjoyed so you know my tastes:

Compulsion (The Heirs of Watson Island, #1)



I'm reading Of Monsters and Men by Jessica Verday, and it's pretty meh at this point. It's not giving me what I want! So, help me please!

    As for recommendations: Jane Eyre, Jamaica Inn (also by Du Maurier), The Mysteries of Udolpho (although I haven't read it, it's supposed to be very good), and Fingersmith (once again, I haven't read it, but I enjoyed the mini-series, which can also be found on my blog).

    It's probably a wee bit different, but I'd definitely recommend Darkmere by Helen Maslin.

    I too love Gothic stories, but am not a fan of scary. You might try Laura Black. I think she is out of print, but sometimes you can buy her books in used bookstores or online stores. She does gothic well. Thanks for the recommendations.

    The Seance by John Harwood. Wieland by Charles Brockden Brown. Drinks with Dead Poets by Glyn Maxwell. Gothic Tales by Elizabeth Gaskell. Ghost Stories by Edith Wharton. The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge. Kept by DJ Taylor. The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry. Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye.

    The Woman in White & The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, Little Dorrit & David Copperfield by Charles Dickens are all very grim & sober & perfect for a Gothic mood though they don't contain Gothic tropes per say. The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole, A Sicilian Romance by Anne Radcliffe are famous Gothic novels, so would Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, Frankeinstein by Mary Shelley, Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by R.L. Stevenson (though not a romance).

    Rebecca is <3. I believe Daphne du Maurier has a lot of Gothic-style romances! And of course the Bronte sisters :)

    I am actually currently doing a Gothic Literature & Culture course at uni at the moment & it's really a lot of fun =).
