Best & Worst Dads We've Come Across In Literature

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

We are talking dads in literature -- the good and the bad!

 Jamie's picks:

I honestly picked books I've read recently....not an OF ALL TIME sort of thing because I wanted to talk about books I read recently.

1. BEST: Lara Jean's dad in Jenny Han's To All The Boys I've Loved Before series: Oh man how I love Lara Jean's dad. LJ's dad is so wonderful and I love how he tries to uphold all the Korean traditions of their mother after she passes away. He's just seriously the best and such a caring dad.

2. BEST: Lucy's dad in The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord: Lucy's dad really reminded me of my stepfather in how he took care of my mom when she was sick. He's such a great dad to Lucy and I really enjoyed both of her parents.

3. BEST: Starr's dad in The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: OH MY GOD I LOVE HER DAD SO MUCH. Her mom too. I honestly would just read a book about her mom and dad because they are just so great.

4. BEST: Kate's dad in My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella: Kate's dad...oh I just loved him. He made me laugh sometimes with the whole glamping business thing and how grumpy the city made him (honestly kind of reminded me of my dad in some ways). He was such a caring dad and wanted his daughter to succeed but, like all dads, doesn't always show it in the most perfect of perfect ways. Loved their relationship.

5. WORST: Savannah's dad in All in Pieces by Suzanne Young: Her dad was seriously terrible. I wanted to kick him so many times. STOP BEING SO SHITTY.

6. WORST: Both Dill and Travis's dads in The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner: Two best friends with two awful dads. HAAAAAAATRED RUNS THROUGH MY VEINS WHEN I THINK ABOUT THEIR DADS.

Bridget's Pick

7. BEST: Mr. Bennet from Pride and Prejudice: He knows it's BS that Elizabeth is being pressured to marry Mr. Collins and defends her against her crazy mother. Seems like a chill dude who I'd like to have in my life!

  1. Big Mav and Mr. Bennet made my list of best dads too!

  2. I've heard great things about the parents in The Hate U Give, I need to check it out. =) Probably a very unpopular opinion, but I actually think Mr. Bennet is a pretty shoddy father; he makes it clear to all of his daughters that Lizzie is his favourite and, essentially, the only one worth his time. Mrs. Bennet is pretty insufferable, but she's not trying to marry her daughters off to be cruel she's trying to marry them off so that they're taken care of and not reduced to poverty should Mr. Bennet suddenly die - a bit like what happens to the Dashwoods in Sense and Sensibility. He's a great character, and his relationship with Lizzie is lovely, but I don't think he's a good father. Great lists!

  3. I guess contemporary books tend to have parents around more! As I looked at my shelves I couldn't remember if there were parents around and if they were it's a greater chance that they weren't great parents. I managed half a list though! :D

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  4. Yes, Starr's dad was great. Good pick there.

I've read several other posts today that also mentioned Mr. Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. I thought that was quite interesting.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

  5. YES! Totally agree that Lara Jean's dad and Mr. Bennett are great. They both made my list. And I also completely agree that the dads in The Serpent King are terrible. They were awful! Great list.

  6. Mr Bennet would be my second pick, right after Atticus Finch from "To Kill A Mockingbird". Not only is Atticus my literary hero, but he was also an amazing dad. He taught his kids to do the right thing even when you face adversity and that`s one of the best lessons you can teach your kids.

  8. I went with Lara Jean's Dad as one of my favourites too. I wish I had thought to put the dad from My Not So Perfect Life and also The Hate U Give-both fab dads! Also agree with you on Mr Bennet, now I want to go and watch the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice!

  9. I recently read "Swimming through Clouds" by Rajdeep Paulus. A lot of the plot revolved around the dad being absolutely horrible. Very abusive and controlling. But the story is so full of hope it's amazing!
