Kelly's Top Ten Dynamic Duos

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This meme was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list complete with one of our bloggers’ answers. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND post a comment on our post with a link to your Top Ten Tuesday post to share with us and all those who are participating. If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment.
If you can't come up with ten, don't worry about it---post as many as you can!

This week's topic:
Top Ten Dynamic Duos
These are the BFFs, partners in crime, powerful couples, and general groups of awesome people that I just can't get out of my head!  Next week--Top Ten Characters I'd Want As Family Members

1. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - these two are simply awesome. The down-to-earth normality of Dr. Watson nicely contrasts the quirkiness and general absurdity of Holmes. I can't think of a more productive pair of best friends!

2. Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy from Pride & Prejudice - you pretty much can't say one name without saying the other. One of the most memorable love stories leaves us with one of the most memorable couples.
3. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series - [technically a trio, I know] even though these three are wizards and fight evil on a regular basis, these best friends are the most relatable to me. They fight, make fun of each other, have each others backs, and get into all sorts of mischief together. I wish I had them as friends!

4. Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings - I initially wanted to put the nine originals of the Fellowship of the Ring here, but since Frodo and Sam stuck together the longest and actually accomplished the mission, they win. [Side note: Google Image searching for 'frodo and sam' is very disturbing. People have sick fantasies.]

5. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn - I devoured The Adventures of Tom Sawyer  and Huckleberry Finn when I was younger. These two are another pair that are practically synonymous with each other, Mark Twain, and the Mississippi River.
6. Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind - admittedly, I've never read this book or seen the movie in its entirety. They are still very much synonymous like Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, and even have a similar relationship. I always think of them when I think of the Civil War.

7. Romeo and Juliet - We've been studying Shakespeare in my Brit Lit class and I've found a lot of dynamic duos in his writing, but Romeo and Juliet are likely the most famous. This couple was young, tragic, and everlasting.
8. Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere - confession: I am obsessed with the BBC/SyFy show Merlin. This famous couple didn't exactly have the most ideal virtues (adultery, lies, imprisonment, exile, etc) but they still manage to scream romance to the rest of us. There are several great duos in Arthurian legend, but these two are my favorite.

9. Peter Pan and Wendy from Peter Pan - my favorite classic childhood characters! I loved the adventures that Peter took Wendy on and wished I could join them. Of all the fairy tales/Disney movies, their tale is my most memorable.
10. Cathy and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights - yeah, these two are pretty psychotic, but they are still classic, so to speak. Their story is filled with love and romance, but mostly revenge, death, lies, and general crazy-person behavior. Still...I love to hate them.

  1. I love Scarlett and Rhett! I can't believe I forgot them...I knew I would forget lots of great duos!

  2. SCORE. You are going to get a TON of hits on this page because you used the words "rhett butler." I'm not sure why so many people google him, but they do.

  3. This was surprisingly hard, I like Top 10 Tuesday because it gets me to think about things I read years ago.

I have to disagree about Romeo & Juliet, I've never been a fan of books or plays that have love at first sight. I don't think that's love, just infatuation.

  4. This may have been the hardest one I've done yet! After the first six my mind turned to sludge..

I thought of Huckleberry Finn and Tom, but it's been too long since I read either to say anything about them.

  5. Awesome list! I can't believe I didn't think of Frodo and Sam!

  6. Great list and good photos. I thought this Meme seemed similar to one we did earlier so I focused on friends/siblings, not lovers.

  7. Love your lists, esp. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy

  9. Great ones! I am loving the diverse lists this week...and loving those that tend to show up on several lists. Wish there was a way to keep track of how many of the same duos show up on everyone's lists.

  11. I questioned the "trio" with Harry Potter too and managed to cut mine down to just Harry and Ron because there is so much they do without Hermione that makes them so much closer to me.

And oh the classics, there are so many I want to read, but all these new shiny books growing old on my shelves or the shelves at the bookstore are crying out louder. Young books always are more demanding and temperamental. :)

  12. Took me a while to find my top ten, but it was worth it - great list!

  13. Great list, you've inclueded several of my favorites! I love the way you have your post set up!

  14. Mine's up... I, uh, had a brief reaction to the wording of the prompt. ;) I also chose to go with only non-romantic pairs.

Tom and Huck is a good pair that I missed.

  15. I smiled at the Frodo/Samwise idea: good on ya!
However, since this was a "duos" list, I excluded the Harry-Ron-Hermoine trio and instead went for the wonderful Weasley brothers, Fred & George.
I enjoyed your list and h happily - we didn't have that much overlap: So many great choices on this one!

  16. I can't believe I forgot Tom and Huck!!!

  17. Great picks! Peter and Wendy is so memorable, it's always bugged me from childhood about how things went for them.

    I'd also add:
    - Anne and Diana, in Anne of Green Gables, for being such best friends. Kindred spirits, if you will.

    - George Milton & Lennie Small, from Of Mice and Men. One looks out for the other, but they share the same dream.

    - Scout and Jem, from To Kill a Mockingbird. Well, you might have to put Atticus in there, paired up with Scout, maybe.

    - the 4 sisters in Little Women! An exception, really, but you included the HP trio.;)

  18. I love that Peter Pan & Wendy made the list :-) awesome duo!

  19. Peter & Wendy, yes! Great choice! Tom & Huck are also a duo I forgot about. I won't get around to participating this week (*grumble*), but it was a fun topic this week :)

  20. Nice choices! I considered some of these couples for my own list. Scarlett and Rhett are wonderful together. Somehow I had completely forgotten about Tom and Huck, though.

  21. good choices, i completely forgot about Wendy and Peter. Thought i was going to have a hard time with this one but once i started i just kept thinking of more.

  22. I didn't even think of Peter and Wendy (or maybe Peter and Tink?). That's certainly a great story.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Peter Pan and Wedy! Yeah! I'm glad you included them, even if it annoys me how Peter thinks of Wendy as his mother. Yuck!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Great List! I just posted mine... it took me a while because I was having such a good time. I really got into this topic, for some reason. :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great list! I only know most of them through the corresponding movies. But, I plan to read each one of these books ... someday.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I SO want Harry, Ron, and Hermione as friends too! You have an awesome list here, and I love the Peter Pan duo :)

  28. I'm glad people like Peter and Wendy, I adore them!

Laurie: I was SO close to putting Fred and George instead, probably because they are my favorite HP characters ever, but went with the classic trio instead. It was hard though!

  29. Goodness, I can't believe I didn't think of some of these couples! Or my favorite within the fairytales, Beauty and the Beast! Ah, well, perhaps another Top Ten will see them there. We both had Holmes and Watson as our #1! :D

  30. So many great choices! Peter and Wendy were definitely a great team!

  31. I could have gone on and listed twenty or thirty more. Ha! You posted some great choices as well.

  34. GREAT prompt this week, but you used up my Rhett and Heathcliffe pairings! lol

Haven't participated yet, will probably post tonight, since I'm going to have to think about this one...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Great list! I also listed Rhett and Scarlett. They were the first duo to jump into my mind when I read this week's top ten. And I see Huck made both our lists; you paired him with Tom and I paired him with Jim!

I only made it to 8 though ...
    I need to read classics!

  39. Great list! I agree with so many of your picks.

  40. I love all the photos this week! Thanks!

  41. Sam and Frodo were a great pair I left off. I like them a lot, but I kind of prefer Merry and Pippin's antics.

    ReplyDelete
  42. And sorry, but could you delete my post 108? I linked to the wrong page for my list. I'm not savvy enough to figure out how to take it down myself. Terribly sorry.

  43. I wanted to put Harry, Ron, & Hermione, but I didn't want to put a trio on my list of duos. Wish I'd done it anyway, because I love them!
