Our Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Mysteries

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

This week we are talking about our ALL TIME favorite books from the mystery genre!

Jamie's Picks

1 -- Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas: If you like your mystery to be a twisty psychological thriller type that feels like it is ripped right from the headlines, you have to check out Dangerous Girls! This one really pulled me in til the very last word!! Little bit of Amanda Knox mixed with the Natalie Holloway spring break story. This spring break trip gone wrong seriously had me on the edge of my seat.

2 -- My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier: I have loved both My Cousin Rachel and Rebecca from this author (still need to read more of hers) but if you are into Gothic mysteries...this author is one of the best in my opinion!

3 -- A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis: Looking for a historical mystery/thriller? This one is also perfect for fall because the setting is just so transporting into this dark and cold asylum. Plus the writing was really great!

4 -- Far From You by Tess Sharpe: If you really enjoy contemporary YA and want to dip your toes into the mystery genre, this is one I highly recommend for that! You'll find yourself so emotionally involved in this quest to find out if Mina's murder really was random like they are saying it is.

5 -- The Fixer by Jennifer Lynn Barnes: The pitch for this book was Veronica Mars meets Scandal and I totally thought this was a pretty decent comparison!! I devoured this book like no other -- DC political scene + twisty thrills.

Julia's Pick

6 -- And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie: I don't read a lot of mysteries anymore, but I adored this book when I read it in high school. I always recommend people give it a read. It's super quick and entertaining.

Kimberly's Pick

7 -- Cormoran Strike Series by Robert Gailbraith (aka J.K. Rowling): I found this series BEFORE J.K. was outed as being the author. I've always loved mysteries. These books take your typical mystery novels to the next level. Intriguing stories, complex characters, rich dialogue, J.K.'s wonderful storytelling... Oh! Also, the audio books are fantastic!

Lauren's Picks

8 -- The Fold by Peter Clines: Granted, this is more of a sci-fi novel, but it is definitely a mystery as well as a thriller! You just never know what is going to happen next.

9 -- Dark Matter by Blake Crouch: This might have been my first Blake Crouch book, but the twist & turns had me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read this book. Not once did I know what would be waiting around the corner.

10 -- The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins: This novel was a complete mystery. The narrator's entire mind was a mystery. While I'm not looking forward to the movie because well... it's another movie based off of a book, I will keep this roller coaster of a novel close and ready pick up up again someday.

What are some of your favorite mysteries??
Also, tell us what genre you chose in the comments!

  2. Dark Matter and Dangerous Girls are two books that have been on my radar, especially DM since people have been posting pictures about it everywhere! I'll have to get myself a copy soon. I can't wait for The Girl on the Train movie! I hope it does the book justice.

  3. There was no way I could pick just one genre, so I ended up doing Picture Books, Middle Grade, Fantasy-ish, Contemporary, and Historical Fiction! (And even that was near impossible to narrow down!!)

Love your mystery picks, I'm especially interested in reading A Madness So Discreet as some point!

  4. I recognise a few of those titles!!! I went for the thriller / suspense genre... so excluded some crime fiction by some arbitrary rules of my own!

And hello, this is my first time joining the linkup!!!

  5. Great picks!

A MADNESS SO DISCREET has been on my TBR for almost a year now. I wanted to make it one of my Halloween reads last year but didn't find the time, so I hope I can manage to read it this October.

I've read DARK MATTER only a few days ago and found it really intriguing, definitely a great mystery. If this was your first Blake Crouch book then I can also recommend the Wayward Pines trilogy which is maybe even more crazy :D

I've read THE FOLD last year and it immediately became one of my all-time favorites, I LOVED it! Have you also read 14 by Peter Clines? It's a different kind of mystery but set in the same universe as THE FOLD and there are some really interesting connections between the books, so if you loved THE FOLD then I highly recommend reading 14, too!

I also enjoyed THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN a lot and am really looking forward to the movie!

The Cormoran Strike series is one of my favorite crime series at the moment, even though I didn't like the 2nd book as much as the other ones but I can't wait to read the fourth book, especially after what happened at the end of book 3!

I've been wanting to read an Agatha Christie novel for quite a while now and AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is the one that sounds most interesting, so I might give it a try soon :)

  6. OOh nice! I still need to read A Madness so Discreet!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  7. I just read my first Daphne Du Maurier book this month, she does write great gothic mystery!

I chose Dystopian fiction as my genre this week. Probably because I just finished reading the Lunar Chronicles recently.

  8. Oooh, Dark Matter is definitely one I need to get my hands on soon. Great list!

  9. Nice picks! I need to read those first three so bad. They sound great!

  11. I loved Dangerous Girls and The Girl on the Train, and And Then There Were None is one of my top 3 favorites books of all time :)

  12. What a great list. :) Haven't read crime/mystery for a while. You have a few I'll take a look. I chose for my blog Gay Romance. :)

  13. There's still a few books on your Top Ten Mystery books that I haven't read yet, but even those are books I intend to read. I love mystery, and you both picked out some of my favorites. Far From You is one of my favorite books, period, and it's so great to see it here!!!

  14. Love The Fixer! It actually made my list of favorite contemporaries!

  15. O.o I LOVED A Madness So Discreet (although there were definitely SUPER creepy aspects to it!) and The Fixer. I've read Cormoran Strike, but my brain is le blanking on what I thought of them. >.< Loved your list! I did historical fiction/fantasy/romance this week and A Madness So Discreet was one of my choices too!

  16. Another fan of Daphne du Maurier here. Jamaica Inn was another of hers I liked. I only managed to come up with 8 books - fairy tale re-tellings for teens. Thanks for the link up.

  17. And Then There Were None is one of my favourite mysteries/classics ever! So wonderfully written, so smart and very gripping - it kept me on the edge of my seat until pretty much the last page. :)

I haven't read any of the others, but The Girl on the Train is on my list! I've accidentally read some spoilers and now I'm just distancing myself from it so the twist will actually be a twist, haha.

  18. I'm really bad at crime/mysteries because I scare easily (lol) but Ellie Marney's Every series is great! It's a YA contemporary retelling/adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.

  22. I'm always up for a good mystery! I loved THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN and AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. I hadn't heard of DANGEROUS GIRLS before, but wow, it sounds good. Adding it to my TBR mountain chain.

  23. I've heard that about My Cousin Rachel! I loved Rebecca so I must now seek out Rachel too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I went for a very similar genre - I listed my favourite gothic novels :-)

  25. I love both the Du Maurier books, too. Have you read The King's General? It's an all-time favorite of mine.

  27. I couldn't make it through REBECCA when I tried to read it in college, but I've been meaning to give it another try since it's been like five or six years. I really loved GONE GIRL when I read it -- totally messed with my brain.

I think I'm going to choose YA fantasy as my genre because I haven't talked up my favorites in awhile. :)

  29. My Cousin Rachel and Rebecca are both wonderful. I agree that The Girl on the Train was an excellent mystery. I'm fond of the Nevada Barr Anna Pigeon mysteries and the Donna Leon Guido Brunetti series--they're always interesting and great sense of place. Another du Maurier Don't Look Now would also definitely be on my mystery/thriller list.

  32. I picked literary fiction. Going to try to participate more often. :)

  33. I read Blake Crouch's Wayward Pines, which I finished in one night. So I'm looking forward to his new one. I always love a good cozy mystery.

My genre was memoirs/biographies. First time participating and hope to do more! love the lists!

  34. I love mysteries! Liane Moriarty is a new favorite of mine, I love the way she weaves the mystery into the story. The Husband's Secret and Big Little Lies are my two faves so far. I am a huge Scotland Yard mystery fan, so the Inspector Lynley series by Elizabeth George, Richard Jury series by Martha Grimes, and The Murder Squad series by Alex Grecian are among my faves too. So many great mysteries out there.
