Top Ten Tuesday FREEBIE: Bridget’s Top Ten Book Boyfriends

For future Top Ten Tuesday topics & info on how to participate, click here!

Just ‘cause I’m married doesn’t mean I can’t have book boyfriends! And since I wrote Top Ten Jerks in Literature for this week’s TTT over on my own blog, I thought I’d do a positive post over here at The Broke and the Bookish! So without further ado, here are my top ten book boyfriends:

1. Richie Tozier from IT by Stephen King. I dig funny guys, and Richie Tozier makes me laugh out loud more than perhaps any other character in any other book.

2. Nate Tucker from 14 by Peter Clines. Nate strikes me as the kind of guy who everyone likes, the guy who’s always up for a beer or for a game of pickup football. He also just seems like an all-around nice person, and someone who I think I would like to be around.

3. Tommy Phan from Tick Tock by Dean Koontz. He’s got some demons (literally), but I think Tommy would be a fun guy to hang out with when he wasn’t being chased by a demon doll from hell.

4. Jake Epping from 11/22/63 by Stephen King. He’s an English teacher and he swing dances. Enough said.

5. Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I was never really “Team Peeta” or “Team Gale,” but if I had to choose, I would definitely go for Peeta. Sweet and kind will ALWAYS beat out rugged and reckless in my book. This has become more and more true as I’ve grown up and realized that dramatic romantic love might be fun, but it’s not sustainable.

6. Dink from Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. We don’t really see a lot of Dink, but I always enjoyed what we did see. He’s incredibly smart—as all the attendees of Battle School are—but he’s not as crazily ambitious as the rest. I just imagine him being a really sweet person, and someone who I think I would like a lot in real life.

7. Devin Jones from Joyland by Stephen King. Pretty much the same as Nate in #2. I obviously have a “type,” even for my book boyfriends.

8. Max de Winter from Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. This one might be a bit of a stretch, especially because I would probably feel much like the new Mrs. de Winter (as in, like I wasn’t good enough for him) but I’ll allow myself one tortured soul on this list, and Max de Winter is it.

9. Captain Wentworth from Persuasion by Jane Austen. He stays faithful to Anne for eight years, even though her family made her break off her relationship with him. Plus, he’s in the military. That gets him a big old A+ in my book.

10. Travis Cornell from Watchers by Dean Koontz. Travis is one of those totally unassuming loner guys who most people would never give a second glance, but who has a treasury of good qualities hidden behind his gruff introversion. He’s also a deeply sad guy—and I would want to make him happy!

  1. Max de Winter! He's a fascinating character, and I wonder a lot about the romance between the main character and himself. I'm still slightly peeved we never learn her name.

    1. I know, right?? It feels so awkward calling her "the new Mrs. de Winter" or whatever. And they talk *about* her name a few times and how it's so unusual and then...no one ever says it. Sigh.

    2. But Max is a murderer! He's a tortured soul, to be sure. But don't turn your back on him! ;)

  2. Peeta and Captain Wentworth would totally be on my list of fictional boyfriends! Good choices :) - Maggie @ macarons & paperbacks

  3. My fave book boyfriends are John After from Jennifer Echols' GOING TOO FAR and Jonah Griggs from JELLICOE ROAD by Melina Marchette <3 And my chosen topic for today is 10 ARCs for Which I'd Punch a Clown! https://dailydahlia.wordpress.com/2015/01/20/top-ten-arcs-for-which-id-punch-a-clown/

  4. My list this week is for historical settings I'd like to see more of. I never really thought of men in books as being fantasy boyfriends; the whole "book boyfriend" thing is really foreign to me.

  5. Peeta is like the best, he's top of the mountain of book boyfriends!

Awesome list, my favorite book boyfriend(at the moment) would have to be either Howl from Howl's Moving Castle or Ron from Harry Potter because I'm rereading it and I've always loved Ron. =)

My list is about gifs this week... It was all I could come up with!

  6. I have only heard of Peeta Mellark from your list, I was Team Gale ;-)

Thank you for sharing.Sharon – Obsession with Books

  7. Gale's unpredictable nature never sat well with me, so I always saw Peeta as a better match for Katniss. Thanks for the great list. I decided to chat about books I would read again if I had the time.

    1. I agree. I think he might have loved her in his own way, but in the end I think he was too selfish.

I LOVE rereading books, but I haven't been lately because I have so many books to read! Great choice of topic. :)

  8. YES!!! If I made this list, Captain Wentworth would be at the top. I died the first time I read "you pierce my soul..." Persuasion is my favorite of Austen's novels; I love and identified most with Anne.

I love 14 -- what an insane, but awesome ride. But, I see what you mean about Nate.

I'd pick Harry Dresden from The Dresden Files series, Seth Mortensen from the Georgina Kincaid series, and Derek Souza from The Darkest Powers series. Which is no surprise if you check my Freebie; my favorite series.

  9. I actually picked fictional crushes for this week. We don't have any of the same though haha you must really love Stephen King! I have only read Misery so far but I LOVED it so I really want to read more!

    1. I do love Stephen King—it was hard for me to only choose three! Definitely give some of his others a try, Misery is great but it scares the pants off me!!

  10. My list isn't so different this week - I did fantasy heroes :) But Captain Wentworth is definitely one of the most swoony characters, even if he's so brooding most of the time. Good choiceof topic :)

    Have a nice day!

  11. I chose the same topic. :) Our only overlap is Peeta, but Captain Wentworth is great! Mr. Darcy gets so much love (blame Colin Firth and his wet clothes), but I prefer several of Austen's other heroes.

    1. Agreed! Mr. Darcy is a good guy in the end, but that doesn't mean he wasn't sort of a snobbish prick in the beginning. But yeah, Colin Firth in wet clothes...yeah.

  12. I loooove Peeta! And I agree, sweet and kind does beat rugged! I do like Captain Wentworth too, though he upset me with how much he ignored Elliot! I knew he was very heartbroken, but it was still frustrating!

  13. This is an awesome list! I didn't even think of doing book boyfriends. Peeta and Captain Wentworth are perfect choices :)
My list is 'Books I've Been Meaning To Read Forever"

  14. I love seeing Max de Winter on this list! I think he's a bit underrated, really. And absolutely yes to Wentworth - he's my favorite Austen hero. I'd also have to add Thornton from Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. He's kind of a dreamboat.

My list was a cheeky "ten classic authors I'd invite to tea", but I may have overshot the number a bit. So hard to choose!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Captain Wentworth is one of Austen's most underrated heroes. And now I want to read Persuasion again, thanks.

For my list today I did bookish twins.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have to agree. Persuasion itself is pretty underrated, though it's my husband's favorite. (Yes, I managed to marry a guy who's a freak about Jane Austen. Love him!)

  21. A lot of Stephen King boyfriends, but no Eddie Dean? Swoon. He would be on my list of fictional boyfriends any day.

    1. Which one is he from? I probably haven't read it if I didn't include him :)

  22. Wow, you chose a lot of characters from Stephen King books. :) That's surprising, I don't really think of Stephen King as writing any sort of romance, though I don't read Stephen King. I just know he's in the horror/thriller genre. :) My list was "The Top Ten Books I Would Make Everyone Read (If I Were A Dictator). My favorite book boyfriends are Dai from The Walled City, North from Free To Fall and Finch from All the Bright Places. <3

    1. He doesn't write a whole lot of romance, I just love some of his male characters! :)

  23. I really don't think I'd be able to choose between Gale and Peeta! And I have to say, I don't think I've ever given Dink a second thought. I love Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow (and have re-read both many times), so then next time I read them I'm going to keep Dink in mind :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'd pick Peeta too, and for the same reason!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Okay I've only "met" two of these book boyfriends and I would totally pick Captain Wentworth too!! The letter, omg <3 I love Persuasion!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love Captain Wentworth and Peeta (although I prefer Gale and Mr. Tilney!) ... but Max de Winter? There's a part in the book where he has a go at his wife for being shy, makes me hate him a little bit. Although, I did enjoy him as played by Charles Dance in the tv series!
I did a list a bit like this on my blog too :)
