pick jana's next book!

Hi all! I know this is probably really silly to some of you, but I'm in a bit of a book slump. As I write this, I am reading my most anticipated book of 2013: Just One Year by Gayle Forman. When it came in the mail, I flailed. I was so excited. I threw my book schedule to the wolves and interrupted regularly scheduled programming to read it. And I'm enjoying it... but, I'm already disappointed in it. And I don't think there's anything wrong with the book, to be honest. I just think I'm in a reading slump. I'm not sure anything will please me right now. I don't know why!!!

Anyway, I thought I would try something for my next book choice. I want YOU to tell me what to read! If you go to my Goodreads profile (and if we're not friends already, please add me!) and check out my various shelves (like favorites, to-read, DNF) you'll get to see kind of what my reading preferences are. You can keep that in mind while you come up with a book for me, or you can ignore it completely and shove me out of my comfort zone. I love that. I will randomly select a book that has been recommended, and will report back here soon with my thoughts! If all goes well, I'll be doing this more often. I really must expand my horizons and read awesome things, and who better to ask for help? :)

    1. I've never read Stephen King before, but I hear he is super scary! This one sounds really good!

  2. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch worked for me to get me out of a slump. Incidentally he made my TTT this week as his name suits his character (if you move the L from Lamora to the end it spells Amoral). Love it. World building is awesome, characters are brilliantly developed and the action and pace are great.

  3. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead is YA, not Adult, put it's perfect to pull you out of a slump. It's super easy to read, and short too, and you'll never be bored while reading it! (:

  4. Ok, for something fun and contemporary I recommend Danny Wallace's CHARLOTTE STREET or FORGOTTEN by Catherine McKenzie - I love them both and read them each in one day.

For something a little different, but not too much so based on some of the stuff in your To Read list, I recommend INTO THE DARKEST CORNER by Elizabeth Haynes. It was a one-sitting read for me. It is dark.

You also have GONE GIRL and HELP FOR THE HAUNTED in your To Read list, both were five star reads for me and would also be good choices :)

    1. Charlotte Street sounds adorable, and Forgotten sounds so interesting! I have added both to my TBR. :)

HOLY MOLY Into the Darkest Corner sounds so unbelievably creepy! I'm definitely adding that one!

      Thanks for the recommendations!

  5. It's not a well known book by any stretch, but Trails in the Sand by P.C. Zick was amazing. It might still be free on Amazon, too.

  6. You have all of Rainbow Rowell's books on your tbr list, and they are all among my favorites. Start with Eleanor & Park. If you're in the mood for a random pick, check out Peace Like a River by Lief Enger.

Peace Like a River sounds really good. Thank you for the recommendation!

  7. Allegiant is OUT, everyone who can get it, reads it. And it's still on your to-read list. Change that! :)
Just say "Goodbye!" to that slump.

  8. I just compared our books and noticed you haven't read Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell or Attachments by her. Both are excellent. E&P a tad bit heavier. Also, This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales was a fav this year. Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols was a surprising good read. My first by her. Good Luck getting out of your slump!

    1. I've been wanting to read Attachments for quite some time. I should just do it!

This Song Will Save Your Life is another one I need to get to soon. I've never read Jennifer Echols either, but I hear she's great! Thanks for all the ideas!

  10. I just finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone and it really is amazing. So beautifully written. Also, Jellicoe Road was wonderful. The first few chapters were a little tough to get through but once you got to the "meat" of the story it was heartbreaking.

    1. Another vote for Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I'm really excited for that one.

Jellicoe Road is another I've been hearing a lot about. I'm scared of it, though, because everyone says it's heartbreaking! Haha.

  11. I think you should read either The Selection or Die For Me. Those are both on you're TBR list and I haven't read them either too. I would like to see why you think I/we should read either of these books too :)

    1. I've really been eying The Selection! I have it on my Kindle, and think it sounds like a fun storyline. I love The Bachelor. :)

  12. The Lies of Locke Lamora is great. I am going to recommend Feed by Mira Grant (Newsflesh Trilogy). A book that I picked up a little while ago that I wasn't expect to enjoy was Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey. It is an action packed SF book. After a few initial chapters, each books ends with an OMG moment, and you are just compelled to keep reading.

    1. Oh, I have Feed! Thanks for reminding me!

  13. I looked at our "compare books" and found three I read and gave four or five stars and you had on your to-read list. We usually score books pretty close to the same star rating - based on our comparables, hope you like these. :)
    Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted
    Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie
Catching Jordan (Hundred Oaks #1) by Miranda Kenneally

    1. Manhunting sounds so cute! I really should read that one soon.

Catching Jordan is another good idea. I'm actually on the blog tour for Racing Savannah in December. I've been iffy on CJ, just because I was not the hugest fan of Stealing Parker. I should give it a go anyway, though, just because SO many people love Catching Jordan!

  14. Maybe you need to break out and pick up something you would never normally read. If I am ever in a slump, that is what I do. On goodreads we have a 75% similarity rating - I would HIGHLY recommend Countdown City by Ben H. WInters. Excellent first book in a trilogy.

  15. i also compared our books, and this is what i came up with!

the night circus. i rather liked it. very unusual.

interview with the vampire - I've read all of Anne Rice's books. ALL of them! i wish there were more! maybe you should read this if you wanna take a break from all the YA and romance... (though the 2nd book is actually my fave)

I also see that you have some chick-lit titles on your list, and if you'd like to go in that direction, i would recommend the author Louise Bagshawe. I've read several of her books and enjoyed every single one. they always have the right balance of cheese, glamour and mystery in them so it's pretty good if you wanna read something light!

    good luck!

  16. Hello! I compared our goodreads lists and I think the ones I would recommend to get you into a bit of a different area would be Kristin Cashore's books. They are really great--start with "Graceling"! Or if you'd rather stick to your TBR--I loved "For Darkness Shows the Stars", "The Fault in our Stars", or "Jellicoe Road"! One I haven't read yet but am really looking forward to after seeing some great reviews is "This Song will Save your Life." Good luck!
